Description

HANDBAG CARRIER iled April 9, 1946 INVENTOR.
) TTORNEY Patented Oct. 14, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HANDBAG CARRIER Settimo Cannella, New York, N. Y.
Application April 9, 1946, Serial No. 660,692
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hand ba carriers, the principal object of the invention being to provide means whereby a woman may carry as a unit; a plurality of pocket books or handbags and other small articles without the necessity of grasping the individual bags.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the drawing accompanying this specification,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carrier constructed in accordance with this invention and showing two handbags carried thereby; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional end view of the carrier without the handbags.
Referring to the drawing, the carrier comprises a box-like structure 3 of a length corresponding to that of the handbags 4 which it is intended to carry, said carrier being provided with a handle 5 pivotally connected to its opposite end walls. The upper portion of the wall of the carrier is in the form of a plurality of curved panels 6, '1 and 8, the juncture between each pair of adjacent panels forming a rib 9 extending the full length of the carrier. Each of said ribs is provided with a longitudinally extending slot I merging in a dovetail recess ll formed in the wall of the carrier.
Each of the handbags 4 designed to be carried by the carrier above described is provided at its bottom with a web l2 forming a bead extending along the longitudinal center line of the bag. The said web may consist of two or more thicknesses of the same material of which the bag is made, said web being adapted to be threaded lengthwise into one of the slots Ill in the carrier. To prevent the bag from being lifted out of its carrier slot, an enlarged cord, wire or small wooden rod may be enclosed within the web either before or after the web is threaded into the slot, so that the said cord, Wire or rod fills out the dovetail space below the slot as shown in Fig. 1 and thus prevents removal of the bag except in the longitudinal direction.
The interior of the carrier may be used as a storage space for small articles, such as gloves, compacts and other toiletries, for which purpose one end wall of the carrier is provided with a. door I3 hinged at M and having a spring latch l for maintainin it normally closed.
The carrier herein described may be made of wood, metal, plastic or any suitable light weight material, and while I have shown provision for carrying only two handbags it will readily be 2 understood that provision may be made thereon for carrying three or more bags if it should be found desirable to do so.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A handbag carrier comprising a member provided with a carrying handle, means for detachably securing a plurality of handbags to said member in slidable relation thereto, and means for preventing detachment of the handbags in a direction laterally of the carrier.
2. A handbag carrier comprising a member provided with a carrying handle, means for detachably securing a plurality of handbags to said member in slidable relation thereto, and means for preventing detachment of the handbags in a direction laterally of the carrier, said member being hollow thereby to provide carrying space for articles other than handbags.
3. The combination of a carrier having a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs on its periphery, each of said ribs being provided with a longitudinal slot merging into a space within the rib of greater width than the slot, a plurality of handbags each having a longitudinally extending web engageable in one of said slots, and means within said web and engageable with said wider space thereby to prevent removal of the handbag in a direction laterally of the carrier.
4. The combination of a carrier having a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs on its periphery, each of said ribs being provided with a longitudinal slot merging into a space within the rib of greater width than the slot, a plurality of handbags each having a longitudinally extending web engageable in one of said slots, and a longitudinal extending member within said web and engageable with said wider space thereby to prevent removal of the handbag in a direction laterally of the carrier.
