UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WENDEL COLLIN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,603, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed February 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that I, WENDEL COLLIN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in combining the tongue of a vehicle with other parts, as hereinafter described.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a road-vehicle provided with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In applying my invention to carriages and other vehicles drawn by horses, as shown in the drawings, the forward axle should be formed with the forward extension, K, on the top of which the plate E is hinged, and the bolt D should-be of such length and so pivoted in the extension K that the lower end will just clear the bottom plate or board, 7:, of the extension K. The connecting loop or rod H is secured to the end of the tongue L, and the tongue L is provided with the Wheels N N, secured to the cross-piece M, and the rods n n, the latter being of such length as to bring the connecting-loop on the end ofthe tongue in positionfor connecting with the boltiand to carry the tongue clear of the ground, and also of the horses heels when detached from the carriage. The plate E should be provided-with the rod P, of such length as to be in easy reach of the driver, and so formed at the upper end as to be secured in the hookspp on the front of the carriage It, and to serve as means of guiding the carriage when the horses are detached. By this means, should the horses become uncontrollable, they may be instantly detached from the carriage by the driver, and without any possible danger of injury to persons in the carriage or injury to the horses.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The tongue L, carrying the divided con meeting-rod H, in combination with the hinged bolt 1), hinged plate E, and the rod P, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. The tongue L, carrying the divided connecting-rod H, cross-bar M, wheels N N, and rods n n, in combination with the pivoted bolt D, hinged plate E, and the rod P, substantially as herein shown and described.
WENDEL COLLIN.
