TRANSPORTATION AND EXHIBITION CASE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 242,319, dated May 31, 1881,

Application filed April 4, 1881.

To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, MILTON S. HERSHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transportation and Exhibition Cases or Boxes, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved box or case arranged for exhibition purposes. Fig. 2 is alike view of the same when designed for transportation, and Fig. 3 is a detail section of said box or case.

My invention has for its object to provide a box or case suitable for shipping candy and other wares, and also adapted for use for exhibiting the same in stock.

My invention consists of a box or case having a portion-say one-half of its top coveredwith glass or equivalenttransparent material, over which fits a sliding lid formed into two sections, both of which are designed for use as a cover when the boxis being shipped or transported, one of said sections forming, when the box is in use in store, a sliding cover for so much of the top of the box as is left uncovered by the glass top.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a rectangular box or case adapted and designed to form a receptacle for candy or other wares.

B represents a pane of glass or equivalent transparent material let into the upper portion of said box in any suitable manner so as to cover a portion-say one-half-of the same.

0 represents a lid, which slides in grooves a a in the sides of the box above the pane B. Said lid is formed in two sections, 0 C the dividing-line being shown by c, at or about the middle of the box. When the full lid is used it forms a complete cover for the box, the section 0 being over the pane B and the section 0 over that portion not covered by said pane. Such full lid will be used in shipping or transporting the box and its contents, and may then be secured by a screw or brads entering the back wall, a, of the box through the lid-section C as shown at c. use in stores, or for exhibition of its contents, the section 0 is removed and the section C slid back to the position previously occupied by the removed section. The box is still completely covered-its forward half by the glass pane B, through which visual inspection of the contents may be made, and its rear half by sliding section 0. This permits purchasers to make selections without exposing the contents of the box to external influences, such as dust, insect predations, 850. hen such selection has been made access may be had to the interior of the box for the removal of its contents, or a portion thereof, by sliding the section 0 forwardly over the pane B, thus leaving one-half of the top of the box uncovered. The withdrawal of the contents having been effected, the section 0 is then slid back to its previous position.

It will be noted that except for purposes of transportation the full lid is unnecessary; hence where it is desired to use the boxes merely for exhibition purposes the wooden or opaque portion of the cover may consist simply of the section or half-lid O, and the section 0 be dispensed with.

By means of the construct-i011 above described a number of these boxes may be placed side by side on a counter without in any manner interfering with each other, the sliding lids movingover their own boxes only, and not over those adjacent.

I have described the pane and slides as being the covers of the box or on the top but it is obvious that they may form the sides as well, and as such are included in my invention and embraced by the claims thereon.

If desired, the lid 0 may, in the first instance, be formed in a single piece, and not divided until after transportation has been accomplished and the box is desired to be used for exhibition purposes.

WhatI claim as myinvention is as follows:

1. A box or case for transporting and exhibiting candies or other wares, having in its top or one of its sides a pane of glass or other material forming a transparent cover for a part only of the same, and a sliding lid or cover in two sections, 0 and (J fitted over or outside of the same, substantially as shown and set forth.
