R. DEBAOHER. Pocket Book Frame.
Patented May 31,1881.
N. PETERS. Fhubl-ilhbgnpher. Wilhinglnm D4 Cv NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT DEBACHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM SOHIMPER, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET-BOOK FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,281, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed March 12,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DEBACHER,0f the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ocket-Book Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the cap which is employed to cover the joint between the two halves or sides of pocket-book frames, and also to the catches for holding the half-frames together and the pocket-book closed.
The invention consists in the combination, with the two hinged sides or halves of a pocketbook frame, of a tubular cap covering the whole or a portion of the joint between said sides or halves, and composed of separate parts attached to said sides or halves and brought into line with each other by the closing of the frame, one of said parts having a sliding bolt or bolts arranged within it, and the other part or parts forming a keeper or keepers for said bolt or bolts, whereby I produce a very desirable form of catch and a neat cap fora pocket-book frame.
The invention also consists in details of construction to be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an open frame embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front-edge view thereof, partly in section. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the closed frame 5 and Fig. 4 represents a perspective View of an open frame of slightly differ- I cut form, also embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A A designate the two sides or halves of the frame, hinged at a in the usual way.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3, the cap which covers the jointbetween the two sides orhalves A A when the frame is closed is tubular and is composed of three parts, B B B. The parts B are attached to the side A. Each cover the end portion of the front edge and one of the ends of the frame, as shown ,while the partB is attached to the side A, and is adapted when the frame is closed to fit snugly between the ends of the parts B, thus forming practically a continuous cap extending along the front edge and the two ends of the frame, and forming alight cap of very ornamental appearance. The part B of the cap forms a barrel or socket for two bolts, 1), which protrude from opposite ends thereof, and are impelled in opposite directions by a spring, 0, arranged between them, as seen in Fig. 2. The parts B of the cap form keepers for the two bolts b, and the ends of the bolts are inclined or slanted, as seen in Fig. 1, so that when the two halves or sides A A are pressed together the bolts will be automatically pushed back to enable the part B to pass between and into line with the parts B, when the bolts will spring out into the keepers and retain the frame and pocket-book closed. By the closing or bringing together of the sides or half-frames the bolt-barrel and keepers are brought into line, and the bolts are thus enabled to spring into their keepers. I thus form a very neat and desirable catch for retaining the pocket-book closed, and when the bolt barrel and keepers are extended along the front edge and both ends of the frame they form a neat cap for covering the joint between the two half-frames or sides.
The bolts 1) have attached pins or push-pieces d, which project through slots cl in the barrel B, and when it is desired to open the frame or pocket-book the two bolts are drawn back out of the keepers by pressing the two pushpieces and the bolts toward each other against the force of the spring 0.
Where the barrel B and bolts 1) are used the keepers B need not extend the whole length of the front edge and ends, but they may consist of short eyes or sockets attached to the side or half-frame A, so as to cover a part of 8 5 the joint.
Referring now to Fig. 4, the cap is shown as composed of two-parts, B B,the first attached to the side or half-frame A and covering the joint along a part of the front edge and one end of the frame, and the latter attached to the side or half-frame A and covering the joint along the remainder of the front edge and the other end. The part B of the cap in this modification forms the barrel for the bolt 1), and the part B forms a keeper for said bolt.
The bolt is impelled outward by a spring in the barrel B, and has a push-piece,d, extending from it through a. slot in the barrel, and upon the barrel is rigidly secured a second push-piece, (P, which forms a resistance to the fingers while the bolt is drawn back by the thumb.
The frame embodying my improved cap and catch is very simple and of attractive appearance, and I dispense with the flap which is frequently attached to one side of the frame and with which engages a sliding bolt.
I am aware that it is old to provide one side or half-frame with a bolt-socket which forms a part of a cap, and to provide the other side or half-frame with a catch which is adapted to enter a hole in the side of the bolt-socket and be secured thereby; but such catch is not a tubular bolt-keeper, nor does it form any part whatever of the cap.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the two hinged sides or halves of a pocket-book frame, of a tubular cap covering the whole or a portion of the jointbetween said sides or halves when the frame is closed, and composed of separate parts attached to said sides or halves, and brought into line with each other by the closing of the frame, one of said parts having a sliding bolt or bolts arranged within it, and the other part or parts forming a keeper or keepers for said bolt or bolts, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the hinged sides or half-frames A A, ofthe keepers B, attached to the side A, the barrel 13, attached to the side A, the sliding bolts 1), and spring 0, arranged betwecn them, substantially as specified.
I ROBERT .DEBAOI-IER.
