SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,029, dated May 24, 1881. application filed March 31, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we,WILLrAM E. OsBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, and GARRET J. POST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pearl River, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

The object of our invention is to provide a clamp for firmly and substantially connecting the transporting-handles to the bodies of haskets; and this we accomplish by the construction of clamp illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a basket containing our clamp. Fig. 2 is a perspective-view of the clamp detached, on alarger scale than the previous figure.

In the drawings, the letter A designates a basket, which may be constructed of wickerwork, splints, or any other suitable material generally used for this purpose. The upper edge of this basket is strengthened by a rim, B, composed of two splints or hoops, a b, which extend one round the outside and the other round the inside of the basket, and are fastened together by tacks or rivets in the manner commonly employed in the manufacture of baskets.

O is the handle, which is made of a strip of wood or any other suitable material bent, as shown, and having its ends ext-ending down between the hoops a b, which compose the rim B.

In baskets of this class as usually constructed the handle is fastened to the rim 0 by rivets or tacks passing through both these parts, and if these tacks work loose or are broken the handle becomes detached and the basket is practically useless.

In order to impart additional strength to the connection between the handle and the body of the basket we apply a metallic clamp, D. This clamp is made from a single piece or plate of sheet metal,which is bent or otherwise shaped.

to form a horizontal top wall, a, and depending side walls or flanges, ff, the lower edges of which are bent or turned inwardly to form longitudinal lips 0 c. This clamp has its wall or flange f, and about half of its top wall, separated or slotted, as at 9, Fig. 2, and such separated portion is bent upward on the top wall, e, so as to project vertically therefrom and form a flange, d, which is perfectly flat and substantially rectangular in form, and is perforated near its upper end, as at h. The clamp thus constructed embraces the hoops to b at each side of the basket, andthe top wall, e, rests on the upper edges of the hoops, while the side depending flanges,ff, clamp the sides of the hoops, and have the lips c underlying the lower edges of the latter, the whole being attached and confined in place by tacks or rivets. The central vertical flange, d, of the clamp rests against the outer side of the handle, and is secured thereto by a pin or rivet passing through the perforation h, and the handle thereby lies within and occupies the recess formed by bend- :ing up the flange d, by which means the edges of the slot in the top wall of the clamp rest against the handle, and serve to impart rigidity to the handle and prevent the latter from moving laterally or bending toward the ends of the basket.

Additional rivets or tacks may be used to secure the body of the clamp D to the rim B, as shown in Fig. 1; and for this purpose our clampis provided with suitable holes, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the tacks or rivets can readily be applied.

By these means the handle is firmly connected to the body of the basket, so that it is not liable to work loose, and the basket can be used for carrying comparatively heavy loads and until its body becomes completely worn out.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A clamp for connecting handles to baskets, consisting of the metallic plate formed with the depending side flanges, f f, and centrally slotted to form a flange, d, which is bent .and projects vertically from the top wall of the clamp, substantially as described.

2. The clamp provided with the top wall, depending flanges having lips at their lower edges, and slotted to form a flange which is bent upwardly on the top wall and projects Vertically therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes described.
