GARMENT HANGER Filed March 22, 1946 Patented Apr. 29, 1947 UiilE SATS OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a garment hanger, and more particularly to a combination hanger adapted for the support of trousers and related articles, such as shirts, coats, or the like.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved hanger characterized by means whereby trousers may be supported readily therefrom and which includes as a substantially integral portion thereof a frame for supporting such garments as coats or the like.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of such a device which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, assemble and utilize.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds, and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
The single figure of the drawing represents a perspective view of one form of hanger embodying features of the instant invention, certain concealed portions thereof being indicated in dotted lines.
The reference character Ill generally indicates a pants hanger of substantially conventional design, including a wire bent, as at H, to form a loop, and reversely bent in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the bend H, as at IE, to form a hook. From the bent portion l2 vertical portions I 3 extend downwardly and terminate in hookshaped portions 14 embedded in oppositely aligned members l5 of wood or the like, provided at their extremities on adjacent sides thereof with felt or similar pads IS. The natural resiliency of the wire serves normally to bias the legs 13 apart,
and the separation of the leg I3 is limited by a loop member I! embracing the two legs and slidable thereon. When it is desired to utilize the device as a pants hanger, the lower extremities of the pants or trousers are positioned between the felt portions It of the members l5, and the loopshaped member I! is adapted to be slid downwardly adjacent the members 15, forcing the lower extremities of the legs 13 closely together and holding the trousers clamped securely between the members [5.
In adapting the pants hanger, previously described, to be utilized as a coat hanger, a. single wire member generally indicated at 20 is looped, as at 2|, in a plurality of twists about one of the members I3 below the hook-shaped portion 14. The legs I3 may be crimped, as at 22, to hold the loop against upward movement, and further crimped, a at 23, to prevent downward movement thereof. From the loop portion 22 horizontal portions 24 extend outwardly merging into inclined portions 25, the extremities of which are bent inwardly, as at 26, to form lower horizontal portions 21 substantially parallel to and in alignment with the portions 24. The extremities of the portions 21 are embedded to a suitable distance in the opposite extremities of one of the blocks or members 15.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that a pants hanger of conventional design, as generally designated at Ill, may be readily converted into a combined pants and coat hanger of the character described by the addition of a, single strand of wire formed as indicated.
It will also be seen that there is herein provided a device which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefo-re shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a. limiting sense.
I claim:
In a device of the character described, in combination with a pants hanger including diverging resilient legs having their upper portions curved to form a hook terminating in spaced parallel clamping blocks, a coat hanger comprising a single separate wire looped about an intermediate portion of one of said legs adjacent said hook and having outwardly extending angularly disposed portions formed at their extremities in inwardly turned portions aligned with the ends of one of said blocks, the extremities of said last-mentioned portions bein secured to said blocks, one of said resilient legs being crimped abov and below the looped portion of said single Wire to retain the same in position.
MICKEY PHILLIPS.
