1 Claim.
My invention relates to new-and useful improvements in garments and more particularly to a jacket and collar construction, the primary object being to provide a stretchable fabric collar on a non-stretchable jacket, the `construction of which will permit of a zipper connection to be readily applied without biting or otherwise injuring the neck of the wearer.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a jacket of non-stretchable material having a free neckline which merges with the free edges of the front panels of the garment at points between the neck and chest of the wearer, so that a knitted or stretchable collar secured to the gar.. ment at the neckline may be reasonably stretched in the fastening of the garment to the body to avoid pinching or biting the neck of the wearer.
A still further object resides in providing a garment which is simple and durable in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in application. l
With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a garment constructed in accordance with my invention being applied to use on a wearer, the zipper fastener on the garment being drawn toward the neck of said wearer;
Figure 2 is a similar View showing the zipper being drawn toward the top of the collar portion with the collar stretched to some degree to avoid the pinching or biting of the neck, effected by the construction of the neck and collar portions of the garment;
Figure 3 is a similar view with the zipper fully effected to close the collar on lthe neck of the wearer;
Figure 4 is a front elevation 0f the garment removed from the wearer with the zipper fastener in position just below the collar portion; and
Figure 5 is a detailed vertical section through the collar of the garment taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
In describing my invention, I shall refer tothe drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which the numeral I designates a jacket formed of non-stretchable material of any desired character, such as a wovenl fabric, leather or the like, the same being cut to provide a back portion 2 and front panels 3 and 4, arm holes being formed between the back and front panelsfor the securing in place of the arms 5 of the garment, although it may be understood that so far as the invention herein is concerned it is immaterial whether the garmentis provided with arm portions or not.
The front free edges of the panels 3 and 4 are designed to be secured together by the conventional zipper construction 6, the finger operating side member of which is designated by' the numeral 1.
The upper edge of the back panel 2 and the upper edges of the front panels 3 and 4 are designed to form a neckline which is identified in the drawing by the numeral 8. It will be noted that this neckline while arcuately formed in the rear dips downwardly toward the front as shown at 9 to merge with the free front edges of the front panels 3 and 4 at points appreciably below the neck of the wearer and at approximately the middle of the upper chest portion, forming substantially a V when the edges of the panels 3 and 4 are brought together. This distinguishes from the ordinary neckline of a jacket, which ordinarily forms a complete circle when closed, and the specific purpose therefor will be more fully and particularly set forth herebelow.
Secured in any desired and approved fashion to the neckline 8-9 of the garment is a, collar Ill formed of knitted or other stretchable material. This collar may be of single or double ply, as desired, the front free edges of which terminate on lines continuing from the front free edges of the panels 3 and 4. These front free edges of the collar It are provided with the teeth I l forming part of the zipper construction previously described, so that the slide member 1 of the fastener structure may be directed upwardly from the front panels of the body to the collar portion. As the finger piece of the slide member 'I is moved to a position, as shown in Figure 1, into the collar, the finger piece is drawn outwardly, as shown in Figure 2, to stretch the collar i0, thus avoiding a pinching or biting of the neck of the wearer. This is effected by reason of the cutting of the neckline in the fashion shown and described, permitting a greater portion of the stretchable collar to be in a position at the front of the neck so that a stretching thereof may be accomplished. If the neckline were entirely circular, as is true in ordinary garments, it would be impossible to stretch the collar at the point adjacent the neck, so that a pinching would be caused. By this construction it is possible to stretch the collar at the portion of the neck which would ordinarily be pinched with the ordinary construction and thus the collar may be quickly and readily fastened to a position as shown in Figure 3 Without injuring or inconveniencing the neck of the wearer.
From tlie foregoing description of the construction of my=` improved garment, the method of making the sarne Yand the; application :to :use will be readily understood, and'ltf'willibeseen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the 'elements best adapted to perform the iunctonsnset forth, it is apparent that various changes in form proportion and in the'minon'detai'ls' on construction may be resorted to Withoutffepasrting from the spirit or sacricing any of the prin- .cples `ofthe, invention.
