Description

(no Model.)
- B. PORTER.
Suspension Bracket for-Lamps.
No. 241,416. 1 Patented may 10,1881. V
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICEQ BENJAMIN PORTER, OF OANASERAGA, NEW YORK.
SUSPENSION-BRACKET FOR LAM PS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,416, dated May 10, 18811. Application filed February 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN PORTER, of Oanaseraga, Allegany county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspension-Brackets for Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of thejoints, showing the arrangement of the coiled spring.
The object of my invention is to provide a lamp-bracket which will admit of the vertical adjustment of the lamp, and will sustain it at any height without the use of counter-weights.
My invention consists in the arrangement of a series of arms or bars, jointed at their ends in the form of lazy-tongs, the said joints being provided with a coiled spring, which, by its elasticity, holds the lamp suspended at any desired height; and it further consists in the arrangement of a V-shaped portion having slots in its arms, through which the lower set of bars pass and are allowed to play freely, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A A represent a series of arms or bars arranged in the form of lazy-tongs, and jointed together at their upper and lower ends by means of an ordinary rivetjoint, allowing the two bars to move freely on the rivet, which passes through slots formed in their ends. The two bars A A have each a hollow portion, 0 and 0, cast upon one side of their outer ends, insuch manner that when the arms are placed together in forming the joint these hollow castings shall be upon opposite sides of the bars. Thesecastings are formed with an opening, a, in their heads, into which a bolt, b, is inserted, which passes through both casings and receives a nut upon its threaded end, thus forming a strong joint, which will allow the bars A A to play upon the lampis adjusted to any desired height the elasticity of the spring 0 will prevent the weight of thelamp from extending the frame, and thus keep it from dropping down. Any number of these sections may be connected together, ac-
cording to the amount of vertical adjustment required. This connection is effected by means of the link or coupling portion h, as shown in Fig. 1, which is formed of two plates, one being placed upon either side of the bars A A B B, and having two slots formed, one above the other, in each plate, into which a rivet is inserted and passes through the slots in the; ends of the bars, thus forming thejoints, and at the same time connecting the sections together. In the lower section the bars B B are jointed with the ordinary rivet-joint, and their ends are extended beyond the joint, as shown at f f These ends pass through slots 9 in the arms of the V-shaped portion D, to whichrthe lamp is attached, and these arms move freely in the said slots, thus allowing the frame to be easily extended or folded up, and distributing the weight of the lamp equally throughout its parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a suspension lamp-bracket, the combination of the bars or arms A A B B, secured together by the joints formed of the hollow casings O 0, having the bolts b, provided with the coiled springsc, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a suspension lamp-bracket, the bars or arms A A B B, secured together by the joints formed of the hollow casings O 0, bolts 0, and coiled springs c, in combination with the V-shaped slotted portion D, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
