PHIL-O B. SHELDN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ANDREW T. MARSH, F SAME PLACE.
HORSE-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 356,896, dated February l, 1887.
Application filed May 2l, 1586. Serial No. 202,908. (No model.)
.To all whom z'fb may concern:
Beit known that I, PHILo B. SnnLnoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the ro art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, .which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective viewof my improved horse-block and hitching device employing a single pair of steps. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of my improved horse-block, exhibiting steps on 2o opposite sides and a side platform. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the device shown in Fig. 2. v
My invention relates to improvements in horse blocks and bitching posts combined which are so constructed and arranged as to meet the Wants financially of all classes requiring the same.
My invention further relates to employing any desired number of steps.
It also further relates to the framework, being composed or const-rooted of light iron tubing or other metallic substances.
My invention also further relates to the arrangement of the top or uppermost step, which 3 5 may be considered as a platform.
It also further relates to themanner in which the steps and platform or top step are arranged, by having part of said single flight of steps on opposite sides of the supporting- 4o frame.
It also further relates to the arrangement of the steps/.Which may approach direct to the carriage, or may approach sidewise, and have a platform-step parallel with a carriage or horse for entering or mounting the same.
The invention also relates to the bitchingchains, which form part of the furniture of said horse-block.
My invention consists of a light frame, preferably made of tubing.
The letter B indicates the main support, which is anchored into the ground or material for supporting it. The top 0r upper portion of the tubes B B is screwed into caps B; also, the pendent portions B2 B2 are secured into 55 said caps B'. The portion BfI of the frame supports wrought-iron straps E, which are bent to conform to the contour of the steps G and platform-step G", thus forming brackets, and are secured on the under side of said steps 6o and platform by rivets e e, &c. Secured to the upper portion of the tubes B B are bitchingehains D I), the object of which is obvious without further description.
In my improved horse-block I put the platform G adjacent to the street, and which is generally made broader than the steps G, so as to provide a platform and make a much more secure footing preparatory to entering avehicle or mounting a horse, as shown in 7o Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I exhibit diii'erent views of a double step with a side platform, G2. This side platform, G2, is put next to the street or roadway, and the ends of the steps for ascend- 7 5 ing to said platform Gi are also next to the street.
In making my improved horse-block various designs can be employed Without altering the spirit of my invention. A T can be put 8o on the tubes B B at the points g g and connect with the tube B, which supports the steps, thus dispensing with the portions B2 B2 of the tubing and substituting knobs or rings for covering or ornamentiug the ends of the tubes B B.
The portions of the tubes B B which are under the ground, and marked b Z7, are provided with anchors b b', to prevent any sudden shock which might occur to the horse- 9o block from being drawn from its fastening or from the ground.
Having described my invention, that which I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a horse-block, in combination with g5 the vertical supports B B and transverse bar B3, uniting said vertical supports at their top ends,y the hangers E E, bent to conform to the steps and removably supported or hung upon the transverse bar B, platform G, and stepsv G G, secured to said hangers E E, substantially as and for lthe purposes described and Shown.
2. In a horse-block, in combination with the vertical supports B B, transverse bar B3,
hangers E E, platform G', and steps G G, the 1o auxiliary platform G2, supported at one end of the platform G', substantially as and for the purposes described and shown.
PHILO B. SHELDON.
