IMPROVEMENT IN AwNlNG-FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,278, dated August 14, 1877; application tiled April 28, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that CHRISTOPHER WERNER, deceased, did invent new and valuable Improvements in Awning-Frames, of which I, Is- ABELLA WERNER, administratrix, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston, and State of South Carolina, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the annexed .drawings,

\ making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of an end view of the improved awningframe. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.

The nature of this invention consists in certain improvements upon the awning-frame for which Letters Patent No. 109,694 were granted to Christopher Werner, November 29, 1870, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

ln the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate the invention,-A represents the wall of the building to which the awning-frame is attached. B B are two horizontal arms projecting outward from the wall, one near each end of the frame, and supporting at their outer ends the rod-or bar C, ranging parallel with the wall.

The arms B B are built into or otherwise secured to the wall, and they carry at their outer ends plates E, which are suitably bent upward to form eyes, through which the rod C may be put. They also carry pins a for the attachment of the suspending-wires or rods D D. These rods are bent over the rod C,

running thence, preferably in pairs, to pins G,

supported in studs H anchored in the wall.

. The rods D D are made to diverge from each other from their lower outer ends to the studs H, and their upper ends are passed through holes in the ends of the pins G, `and nuts b screwed on the ends of the rods D D, to adjust the tension of the same.

The above is substantially the same as shown and described in the patent above referred to.

L L designate two scroll-braces, one at each end of the frame. The .rear end of each brace L is fastened, by a bolt, d, to the inner side of the side arm B, while the front end has attached to it a metal strap, e', to form an eye for the passage of the rod C. Through this end of the brace is also passed a pin, a', for the attachment of rods D' D', which are bent and attached to the wall in the same manner as described for the rods D. These scrollbraces L L efectually brace and steady the frame, making the same perfectly firm and steady, without any liability of lateral movement or vibration.

To still further strengthen the rod C, a bowbrace, P, is applied to its under side, as shown in the drawing. The ends of this brace are fastened by bolts or rivets to the under side of the rod C near each end-that is, on the inside of the side arms B B-and from the center of the rod C passes a screw, h, downward through a hole in the center of the brace I. A nut, e', is screwed on said bolt above the brace, whereby said brace may be more or less bowed to regulate the tension thereof, as required.

The entire frame thus constructed' may be made either movable or stationary, as may be desired, and it is light, cheap, and durable. The suspending-rods D and 1D serve also as rafters as used in the ordinary awningframes.

For the rods C, arms B, rod or rods D Dl and scroll-braces L, gas or any other metal tubing that is light and strong is preferred to be used; and where such tubing is used, tubingcouplings are preferred instead of the plates E, the awning-frame being in all cases entirely suspended by the top rafters. l

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- In awnings, scroll-braces L L, provided with eyes e and pins a', in combination with the side arms B, rod C, and suspension-rods D D', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
