CRATE OR BASKET FOR CARRYING BOTTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,303, dated May 10, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH CLOSE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Brooklyn,

in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grates or Baskets for Carrying Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists in the combination, in a crate or basket for carrying bottles, of a bottom, slats secured to the sides and ends of said bottom, posts which rise from the bottom and are firmly secured to said bottom slats, top slats secured to the upper ends of said posts and serving to steady the same in their position, intermediate posts secured in the bottom at suitable distances apart, and one or more sets of traverses extending through the main posts and through the intermediate posts.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or top view. Fig. 2 is a side-elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane as m, Fig. 2.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the bottom of my crate or basket, which is, by preference, made of wood, but which can be made of any other suitable material. To the sides and ends of this bottom are firmly secured slats B B, and from said bottom rise a series of posts, O O, the upper ends of which are connected by slats D I), while their bottom ends fit into sockets formed for their reception in the bottom A, so that a firm and durable frame is produced which is not liable to break easily. The height of the posts O O is equal to or somewhat in excess of the heightof the bottles to be carried in the basket, and between said main posts are a series of intermediate posts, E E, which are stepped in sockets to a, (see Fig. 3,) and secured by tacks or screws I) I). Through the main posts 0 O and the in or cells, each large enough for the reception 0t one bottle. The height of the intermediate posts is about equal to two-thirds of the height of the main posts, and these main posts are sufficiently far apart to allow the fingers of a hand to pass conveniently between them, so that by taking hold of the top slats, D D, on the opposite sides or ends the crate or basket, together with its contents, can be conveniently carried.

It will also be noticed that my crates or baskets, whether filled or empty, can be conveniently placed one on top of the other, so thata large number of the same, together with their contents, can be transported in a vehicle of comparatively small capacity. Furthermore, my crates or baskets are exceedingly strong and durable, comparatively light, and they can be made with comparatively little expense.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, in a crate or basket for carrying bottles, of a bottom, A, bottom slats, B B, main posts. 0 0, top slats, D D, intermediate posts, E E, and traverses 0 c, all constructed and connected substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
