Description

UNITE BERTRAND IV. ATVOOD, OF WHITMAN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PACKINGECASE FOR BOTTLES..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,311, dated February 22, 189:8.
Application filed March 3, 1897. Serial No. 625,883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t `may concern,.-
Beit known that I, BERTRAND W. ATWOOD, of Whitman, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Cases for Bottles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication.
My invention relates more particularly to open-work packing-cases for bottles, although with slight modifications it may be applied to all kinds ofl packing-cases in which it is desirable to insure an inclosing case for glass or other fragile ware which will protect its contents by yielding supports, so that in handling and transportation the articles can only come in contact with elastic supports.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my packing-cases, a bottle within it being represented by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one of the yielding supports of the packing-case.
In the drawings, A A represent four cor-l ner-posts, to which the side yielding supports B B are attached.
The bottom pieces C and Care securely attached to the other parts and are provided with elastic bosses D D, which extend above the surface and are adapted to receive the bottom of the bottle and to protect it from fracture by receiving a sudden jar as it is lowered into its case.
The novelty of this device consists in the construction of the yielding supports B,which I will now describe.
Each of the yielding` supports or side slats B consists of an outside member K, (see Fig. 2,) ends L L, an opening H H', and yielding tongue-pieces T T. 'These tongues nearly meet at R in the center and are sufiiciently yielding to protect the bottle that is in contact with them from receiving any fracture by a sudden impact or blow from Without. The side supports B B are represented in the drawings as made each of a single piece lierfed, as at H I-I', and cut, as at R; but, if desirable, the support B may be made by uniting thin pieces together. For convenience in inserting the bottle each of the pieces B is chamfered off, as shown at S.
A packing-case for bottles consisting of upright posts and suitable bottom slats, said upright posts having cross-slats provided with elastic tongue-pieces extending from the ends of the said cross-slats to a point nearthe center, the said tongue-pieces being adapted to elastically hold the bottle by their free ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 22d day of February, A. D. 1897.
BERTRAND w. ATwooD.
