UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BOYD, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
OUTER CASE FOR BURlAL-CASKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,282, dated May 10, 1881,
Application filed February 2, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Born, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Grave-Vaults for Burial-Gaskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that class of inventions known as burglar-proof grave-vaults for burial-caskets and it has for its object certain improvements on the Patent No. 220,119 granted to myself September 30, 1879.
The improvements therein consist in a bottom or base for a grave-vault composed of a bottom sheet made of wrought-metal plates, to which are riveted angle-irons, which irons form the sides of said base; and, furthermore, in the construction on thebase of corner-pieces, made of cast-iron, provided with flanges and having their upper ends curved outwardly and extending above the sides of the base, all as hereinafter more fully described. These features are clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my cornerpieees, showing the construction of the same; Fig. 2, a sectional view, showing the manner of riveting the bottom plate to the angle-irons; and Fig. 3, a view of one of the angle-irons with one of my improved corner-pieces attached thereto.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The bottom sheet, A, is of fiat rectangular form, and is made of wrough t-metal plates riveted together like boiler-plates, and either having the rivet-heads countersunk or projecting, as may be desired. This bottom sheet, A, is firmly riveted at the points a to the angle-irons B, which may be of any desired dimension. Said angle-irons B form the upturned edges of the base, and when riveted to the sheet A form the base complete. The top of my vault, when ("S0 model.)
in position, fits tightly inside of these angleirons.
O is one of my improved corner-pieces, which is designed to be attached to the corner of the base in such a manner as to have its upper end projecting above the sides of said base, and for the purpose, as before stated, of afl'ording means for the ready and perfect adjustment of the top and base of my vault. These cornerpieces, which are riveted to the angle-irons B at 0 0, are made of cast-iron or other suitable material, and have on their inner surface a projecting flange, b, by means of which they are made to fit nicely onto the corners of the base.
The sides B of the base being of the same thickness as the flange b of the corner-pieces O, when said corner pieces are adjusted a smooth surface is formed on the inner side down to the bottom of the vault.
The upper end of the corner-pieces O being scooped shape, tapering outwardly, when the top of the vaultis received within the four cornersits own weight causes it to attain its proper position.
It will be clearly seen that by the use of these corner-pieces the top and bottom can be adjusted quickly and without any danger ot the top slipping from the sides B before it has gained its proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A vault for burial-caskets having its base composed of the bottom sheet, A, the angle irons B, and the corner-pieces C, said cornerpieces being provided with the flanges b and having their upper ends curved outwardly and extending above the sides of the base, the several parts constructed and joined together as described, and for the purposes set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 28th day of January, 1881.
GEO. W. BOYD.
