N0. -Partented Apr 26, 'ILS a "Z AJ2 l i SJ A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD S. MOENTIRE, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SOLOMON MCNEILL, OF SAME PLAGE.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.. 240,743, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed September 27, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD S. McEN'rIEE, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do herebydeclare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference 1o marked thereon, making a part of this specification. t This invention relates to certain improvements in spring bed-bottoms; and it has for its objects to provide an improved web-hook t 5 for connecting the upper parts of the springs together, the said hooks forming, in connection with the springs, a level and highly elastic surface for supporting a mattress, cushion, or bedding, the hooks being detachable and inzo terchangeable, as well as the springs, whereby said hooks lmay be separated and removed from one portion of the bed when weakened by use and replaced by those from other portions not so weakened, thus enhancing the durability of the bed, and by means of which the said springs and hooks can be conveniently employed, in connection with a supporting- `frame constructed in sections, for the purpose of folding for packing and transportation, as
3o more fully hereinafter specilied. These objects 1 accomplish by the devices illustra-ted in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a plan view of a bedbottom, showing my invention; and Fig. 2, a
3 5 perspective view ot' a detached portion ofthe same.
The letter A indicates one end ofthe frame which supports the springs, and B the slats of such frame, which connect the two ends of 4o the frame.
The letter O indicates the spiral springs, which are preferably formed in pairs, and are secured to adjoining slats, as indicated.
The letter l) indicates my improved web or connecting hooks. These are formed each of a continuous wire, bent at intervals, as indicated at d', forming engaging-loops, by which the hooks and springs of the two sections a and b of the frame A B can be detachably secured together. The said wires are also bent 5o at' suitable intervals, forming loops 0l, to engage the edges of the springs (l, as shown, and at equidistant points between said loops are crossed and interlocked, as indicated by the letter di. The free ends of the wires are formed with terminal hooks cl3, which are secured to one ot' the side springs of the series, and the portions of the wires adjacent to the ends ot' the frame have the hooks omitted, and are secured to the frame by means of the 6o small staples e, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
It will be seen that as thus constructed the two sections ot' the bed-bottom a and b may be readily separated, by unhooking the loops d', for storage or transportation, and that the parts may be readily interchanged When one portion of the bed becomes weakened. by more frequent use than other portions, and that when the parts are connected a level and 7o elastic supporting-surface will be formed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y l. As an article of manufacture, the Webhook for connecting the springs of a bed-bottom, the same consisting of a wire bent at d, forming a connecting-loop, and at d, forming loops for engaging the springs, the said Wires being crossed and interlocked at intermediate 8o points, d2, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the springs C, the web-hooks D, provided with interlocking loops d', loops d, and crossed at d2, as described, sub- 85 stantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of August, 1880.
RICHARD S. MCENTIRE.
