PlPE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,067, dated April 12, 1881 Application filed February 16, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELoss WORDEN, of Oil City, in the county ofVena-ngo and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in forming one of the tongs with a bit chamber or seat adapted to receive and hold a square, parallelopiped, or any many-sided removable bite-block in such manner as to present one edge of the bite-block in position to take hold of the pipe, the block being retained in place in the chamber by a recessed button.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe-tongs.
, Fig. 2 is a front view of the part carrying the bite. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the removable bite.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the ordinary bent or hookshaped tong or jaw pivoted to the bite-tong B by the rivet a. The bite-tong B is cast of steel or other metal, and has the chamber 1) formed in it in such manner as to form the narrow opening or Slot 0 across the diagonal face 0 of the tong. The chamber 12 is closed or partially closed at one end, as shown at b, by a portion of the casting. The chamber b may be square, or of any other form to adapt it to receive a removable biteblook, O, of corresponding shape, and present one edge thereof through the narrow opening 0 in position to take hold upon the pipe D, as shown. The bite-block (J is retained in place in the chamber by the recessed button 01 pivoted to the side of the bite-tong.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown the chamber square, while in Fig. 3 I have shown it in the form of a parallelopiped with the biteblocks shaped to correspond. The latter form is preferable, as it gives greater strength to the under lip of the bite-tong, and furnishes longer leverage of the walls of the chamber or seat upon the block. But it is obvious that any form of chamber and block might be used and not depart from the spirit of my invention.
The bite-blocks are easily removable by means of the recessed button 61, and the blocks can thus be reversed with little trouble when the edges become worn, or they can be replaced with new blocks, or with worn blocks which have been sharpened.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The bite-ton g B, formed with the chamber or seat I), closed or partially closed at one end, and with the narrow opening or slot 0 across the diagonal face e,- in combination with the removable bite O and the recessed button d, substantially as shown and described.
