Patented Dec. 18, 1945l UNITED STATSV P ICE .B01-IL. i AlicL ClarkMillYallsy .4 A V Application Marcus, 1945 serial .N. 1.f58'1,oss if Claims ,ICLiii-j f1 This invention relates to improvements in dolls.-
An object of my invention is to provide a cloth doll having a head which embodies definite facial characteristics.
Another object of my invention is to provide a dolls head having a cloth covering which'is so shaped and `constructed as to give the face a definite form and a natural appearance.
Other objects of my invention will be pointed out hereinafter, indicated in the appended claims, or will be obvious to one skilled in the art upon. an understanding of the present disclosure. For the purpose of this application I have elected to show herein certain details of a doll head representative of my invention; it is to be understood, however, that the embodiment oimy invention herein shown and described is for the purpose of illustration only, and that therefore it is n ot to be regarded as exhaustive of the variations of lthe invention, nor is it to be given an interpretation such as might have the effect of limiting the claims short of the true and most comprehensive scope of theinvention in the art.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. 1 is a front View' of a doll head embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side View of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken through a cheek;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Y
Fig. 6 is a sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2; and
Figs. 7 and 8 are blanks which are employed in forming the face.
Referring to the drawing, and first to Figs. 7 and 8, the numerals I and 2 designate two cloth blanks or sections cut on the bias from a suitable Woven fabric which is capable of stretching when pulled at an angle with respect to its warp and weft threads. )In constructing aV dolls head in accordance with my invention two of the blanks I are used to form the central part of the face and two of the blanks 2 are used to form the opposite sides of the face. The adjacent side edges of the lblanks I where they are normally joined together by stitching are each formed below its upper end with a comparatively long curved forehead protuberance 3, a short nose protuberance 4, an inwardly curved chin protuberance 5 and an outwardly inclined neck protuberance 6. When the adjacent edges of the two similarly shaped blanks I are joined together as by stitching, the protuberances 3-forma bulged .area constituting a forehead 3', the short protuberances 4 form a small bulged member constituting a nose 4', and the inwardly curved protuberances 5 form a bulged area constituting a chin 5', while the inclined protuberances constitute the front side of a neck 1.
The opposite side edges of the blanks I, commencing at their upper ends and proceeding downwardly are each cut vertically as at 8, semicircularly as at 9, and then vertically as at III.
The inner side edges of the blanks 2, normally joined by stitching to the blanks I, are each cut as at 8a, 9a and Illa to match the similarly shaped edge of a blank I to which it is joined.
When the adjacent side edges of the blanks I and the blanks 2 are joined by stitching, the complementary semi-circular protuberances 9 and 9a form bulged areas constituting cheeks 8'. The joined edges Il) and Illa. at the lower ends of the blanks I and 2 connect the sides of the neck with its front portion, the latter being formed by the lower ends of the blanks I.
The top and rear of the head, as well as the rear side of the neck are made up of suitably cut and proportioned pieces of fabric II which are connected one to another and to the outer edges of the blanks I and 2 by stitching.
After the blanks are connected one to another in the manner described to form a face for the dolls head, the various pieces II making up the top and rear of the head are joined by stitching to the outer edges of said face. The area or space inside the joined blanks and pieces II is then lled through the neck opening with cotton, Wool or other suitable material I2.
Since the blanks I and 2 are cut on a bias, as shown by the shaded areas on Figs. 'I and 8, a pressure applied on the bulged areas when the lling I2 is placed inside the headv covering will cause a sufficient expansion of the material around said bulged areas to provide definite shapes and fullness to the forehead 3', the nose 4', the chin 5 and the cheeks 8. The eyes I3 and a mouth I4 are painted or embroidered on the face in the usual manner.
The head when nally completed is sewed on a suitably constructed and shaped body, preferably having a cloth covering and a fiber lling. When certain kinds of light weight cloth are used in making the head covering, it is sometimes desirable to also use an inner lining for reenforcement purposes.
What I claim is'.
l. In a doll head, an outer head covering having a face portion comprising four joined sections arranged alongside one another, the two inner sections at their joined edges forming the nose and chin of the face portion, and the two outer sections together with the inner sections forming the cheeks of the face portion, and a filling inside, the covering.
2. In a. dQll head, an outer covering having a face portionmmade up of a number of joined sections arranged alongside one another, the two inner sections being substantially identical in shape and `,having inner irregular edges which are connected together to form bulged areas constituting the.` chin, the nose and the forehead of the face portion, and two other of the sections having irregular edges which are connected to the outer edges of the inner sections and which, together with the said inner sections, form bulged areas' constituting the cheeks of the face portion, and a lling inside the covering.
3. In a. doll head, an outer flexible covering having a face portion made up of a plurality of joined sections of predetermined irregular shapes arranged side by side, two of the joined sections forming bulged areas corresponding to the nose, chin and forehead of a human face, and others of the sections, together with the two aforesaid joined sections forming other bulged areas corresponding to other facial characteristics, and a lling inside the covering.
4. In a doll head, an outer flexible covering having a face portion made up of a plurality of joined sections of predetermined elongated irregular shapes arranged side by side, two of the sections having their inner lateral edges both similarly formed with a long curved upper part, a short protruding intermediate part and a lower curved part, the said similar parts being joined to each other to form bulged areas which constitute a forehead, a nose and a chin on the face portion, and a lling inside the covering.
