gated block or slab 4 of rubber material possess- This invention relates to a door check and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which, in addition to its primary purpose of preventing noisy slamming of doors, provides means to hold the'door partly open. for ventilation or for theeasy entry of small children andhouse pets. W i
Another object of the invention is: to provide a device of this kind of an overhead type which assures the same being in a position to eliminate stumbling as well as the necessity ofa person stooping or bending over when necessary to adjustthesame. w l i i a The invention consists inthe details of con-. struction and in the combination and arrange ment of the several parts of my improved door check whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a door check constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention inapplied position, the associated door frame being in fragment;
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure l, the closed position of the door being indicated by broken lines; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged elevational view with a portion in section of 'the check as herein embodied, the line of section being substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, B denotes an elongated body. member of desired dimensions and which, when applied, has a fiat end a butting the upper portion of a door frame with the body B extending outwardly therefrom in the same general direction in which the door D swings. This body B may be anchored in place in any desired manner but, as shown in the accompanying drawing, such securement is obtained by the use of the brackets I secured to both the body member B and the door frame F by the screws 2 or otherwise as may be preferred.
The body member B, when applied, is positioned in close proximity to the door opening and the longitudinal face b of the body member B immediately adjacent to the door opening is provided therealong with a series of longitudinally spaced sockets or recesses 3 in each of which is ing the desirable pliable or flexible resistance but which normally maintains a substantially. fixed formationr i i The block or slab 4 is of a length, when applied, to extend a material distance beyond the face I) of the body member B and said extended portion is slit, as at d, at points spaced transversely of the block or slab 4 to provide the leaf members 5. These leaf members 5 extend within the path of a free marginal portion of the door. as it swings into either open or closed position and the leaf members 5, while particularlyretarding the closing movement of the door D, also provide means whereby the door D may be effectively held in a partly openposition, Particularly when the door is engaged between adjacent blocks or slabs 4 and which is particularlydesirable for ventilation and toallow for the entry of small children and house pets; It is believed to be apparent that when a marginal portion of the door Dis engaged between adjacent blocks or slabs 4, the door will be held in a partially open position until forcibly moved.
By having the extended portion of each of the blocks or slabs 4 in the nature of leaves 5, the liability of the door D becoming stuck when being swung into either open or closed position is substantially eliminated as these leaves 5 afford ini creased pliability and hence offer less resistance although it is to be stated that each leaf 5 helps to act as a brake to check the speed of the swinging or closing door, thereby preventing a noisy slam. The efliciency of these leaves 5 is further increased by having such leaves 5 of each block or slab 4 successively of increased length with the shorter leaf outermost.
Each of the blocks or slabs 4 may be secured or held within its socket 3 in any manner desired but I find it of particular advantage to provide the solid inserted end portions 0 of these blocks or slabs 4 with the openings 6 extending transversely therethrough which register with the longitudinally disposed opening 1 extending through the body member B at substantially its axial center. This permits the insertion through the body member B and the portions 0 of the blocks or slabs 4 of an elongated holding shank 8, one end portion being provided with a fixed head 9 which is received by a counterbore Ill preferably at the inner end of the body member B while the opposite end portion of the shank 8 has threaded thereon a holding nut I I which coacts with the adjacent or outer end of the body snugly fitted the solid end portion 0 of an elonmember It is believed to b Obvious a up n removal of the shank 8, a block or slab 4 can be readily removed and replaced as the requirements of practice may find necessary.
In view of the foregoing it is believed to be readily apparent that my improved door check is one which can be used at the upper portion of a door frame so that the same will be overhead and out of the way, thus eliminating the liability of a person stumbling over the type of checks now frequently used which. are positioned at the bottbmrportiorr of the door-frame,
With the device as herein disclosed, it is also unnecessary for a person to bend or stoop over when it is required in any way to adjust the" check and with the further advantage of 1.51115 stantially eliminating the liability of the device i being interfered with by children andhous'e' pets.
The body B may be made of woo'dt metal? or any material deemed suitable.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious. that 3A door check, constructed accordance. withmy invention is particularlyawell separate resilient-members withadjacent "members oi the series in close relation.
