My present invention has reference to a device Afor automatically closing doors andv has for its primary objectl the provision of a simple and effective device for Vthis purpose which may be placed on any door and so arranged that the tension on the door may be easily and quickly adjusted.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be attached to the inside of a door frame in a manner that will not mar the woodwork and which includes a exible element that has one end attached to the door, the said element being trained around sheave wheels in oppositely disposed pulley blocks connected to coil compression springs of different st-rengths and which springs are adjustably secured to the ends of the device, together with a slidable check member to 0 which the strands of the cable tra-ined around the sheave wheels are directed, and whereby the springs normally hold the door closed but permit of the ready opening thereof but preventing the door in its outward swinging or glass panels that may be carried thereby and which will likewise first impart a rapid swinging of the door in a closing direction and thereafter cause the door vto be fully closed in a gentle manner and held in such closed position regardless of the pressure of wind thereagainst.
The invention will lbe fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.

The improvement contemplates a metal casing l of a rectangular formation which is preferably stamped. The casing has an open top from whose ends there extend ears 2 and through these ears there are passed screws or like securing elements that fix the casing on the top door abutment strip 3 of a door casing 4 to which there is hinged a'door 5. G5 The door, of course, may be of any construction, such as a house door, a garage door, etc.7 and the improvement is designed for use not only on a hinged door but on a sliding door as will hereinafter be apparent.
In the ends of the casing l there are se-V cured coiled compression springs 6 and 7,
respectively. The spring 7 is strong and the spring 6 is weak in comparison to the spring 7.
Between the coils of both of the springs there are arranged the flanged heads 7-7 of interiorly threaded sleeves 8 8 that have The sleeves are oppositely longer than the body of the sleeve 8 received in the convolutions of the spring 6. As a niatterof-fact the headed sleeve received in the spring 6 is practically in the nature of a `-headed nut whoseY body is round and there is screwed therein a shank of a comparatively short bolt l0. The sleeve engaged by the bolt is primarily in the nature of a holding inem- `ber Yfor the spring 6 but by turning the bolt l0 the tension of the spring 6 may beslightly 9*? adjusted. The bore of the longer sleeve received in the spring 7 is non-threaded but has passed centrally therethrough a bolt member ll whose head contacts with the second end of the casing and the bolt has screwed 99 thereon a nutlQ which is fixed in any desired -manner to the longer sleeve 8 so that the turning of the screw will cause a longitudinal movement to the nut l2 which, when turning on the'bolt 11 will turn the sleeve 8 to bring 100 its head or flange 7 between desired convolutions of the spring 7 and consequently adjust the tension of th-e said stronnv spring 7.
To the confronting ends of the respective springs 6 and 7 there are connected the eye ends of pulley blocks 13 and 14, respectively. In each of the pulleyblocks there is journaled an inner sheave wheel 15 and an outer and smaller sheave wheel 16. Secured to the pulley block 14, there is one end of a flexible element such as a window sash cordf or like flexible element 17. The element 17 has one end secured to the block 14 and is from thence directed and trained around the smaller sheave wheel 16 carried by the block 13. The element 17 is directed toward and is trained around the sheave wheel 16 in the block 14 and from thence around the larger sheave wheel 15'on the block-13 and is again directed toward the block 14 and trained over the large sheave wheel 15 therein. The element 17 is directed4 from this block 14 between a pair of grooved rollers 17"--17 disposed opposite an opening in the front of the casing 1. The secondend of the element 17 is fixed, as at 18, to the upper portion ofthe door 5. n
All of the leads of the cable trained around sheave Wheels except the portion of the cable that passes through the opening between the guide pulleys 17 pass through notches 19 and 2O that enter from the opposite sides of a sub'- stantially rectangular check member or plate V21 that isrfreely received in the casing 1 and is held by the said leads of the cable in the said casing 1.
Both of the springs 6 and 7 are in contracted condition when the door 5 is closed. The springs hold the door closed with such rigidity that the door cannot be opened by gusts of wind, but -must be opened by manual force of Vpressure thereagainst. The opening of the door, however, requires no undue exertion upon the part of the operator.. The opening of the door draws on the cable 17 to first cause the expansion of the comparatively light spring 6 and the longitudinal movement of the pulley block 13 in the casing to cause the same to contact with the slidable check 21. As the door is further opened the check I block 21 will be moved toward the pulley block 14 and a still furtheropening of the door will cause the expansion of the spring 7 which now acts in conjunction with the fully expanded light spring 6 so that the door cannot be opened beyond a predetermined extent or degree and the opening of the door is accomplished in a gentle manner to obviate any liability of injury to the door and especially any breakage of glass panels in the door. A- release of the door'permits of the said door being swung to closed position. The strong spring 7 will first tend to contract to its initial position, drawing the pulley block 14 therewith. W'hen relieved of the pressure .exerted by the spring 7 the spring 6 willretract, fully drawing the flexible element 17 to within the casing, but in a gentle manner so that the door will be quickly and siliently closed without any liability of injury being inflicted to the door, its frame or the door panels in such closing operation. As disclosed especially by Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing, the casing l, adjacent to its outer side, may have a round opening therethrough, the said opening being tapered and beingsurrounded by a sleeve 22 and through this sleeve the end of the cable 15 is directed when the said cable is to be attached to a sliding instead of a swinging door.
It is believed that the construction, operation and manifest advantages of my improve- Yment will be understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art to which such invention relates so that further detailed description will not be required. Y
Having described the invention,.I claim:
1. VA device for Athe Vpurpose set vforth and i'n combination with a door and a jamb for said door, a casing fixed on the jamb, pulley blocks in the casing, sheave wheels journaled in the blocks, a flexible element fixed to one of the blocks andtrained over the sheave wheels .of the respective blocks and bein guided through the casing and fixed to the door, ablock affording a check for the pulleys having its opposite edges grooved to receive the longitudinal leads ofthe cable therein, coiled springs fixed to the pulley blocks and to the respective ends of the casing, and one of said' springs being of a materiallyv greater strength than the other spring.
2. A; device according to claim 1, in which the stronger compression spring is provided with tension means.
3. A device according to'claim 1, in which the headed sleeve is received'in the stronger spring and the head thereof arranged between the convolutions of the spring, the bolt passing through the sleeve and the nut screwed on 'the bolt and in contact with the inner end of the sleeve.
