Description
May 1, 1945- c. s. OLSON WHEELED FIGURE TOY Filed Feb. 1, 1945 A7 ORA/f) Patented May 1, 1945,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEV 2,374,888 wnnanen grooms rov Charles 5.. Olson, GulfportQMiss, assignor to Toy Kraft, Inc., a corporation of Ohio Application February 1, 1945,. Serial No. 515,626-
3 Claims. (Cl. rm-104') This invention relates toa wheeled figure toy and it is a particular object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be read ily trundled bya child and which is of a character to afford amusement. I
Furthermore; it is an object of the invention to provide a toy including a wheel-supported body and wherein said body isp OV with a plurality 'of movable parts which are'simultaneously operated under the action of a supporting wheelfor the body. l V I The inventionconsists in the details of construction and in the combinationand arrangement of the several parts of my improved wheeled figure toy whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter morei'u-lly set forth. X
In-- order that my invention may be better understood', I will now proceed to des'cribethesazme with reference. to the accompanying. drawing, wherein: t
Figure l is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a wheeled figure toy constructed in accordance with an embodiment. of my invention,
the line of section being onthe line:v l--I' of Figure 2, second positionsof certain of: the parts bemg indicated by broken lines; and
Figure 2* is a view in top plan ofJthetoy as herein comprised. i i
Inthe embodiment of the invention as. illuscontact. from above with the periphery of porting wheel. M for the toy.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the handle member 9 is straight from end to end and, when'applied, extends upwardly and rearwardly from the body B when the toy is in use.
' The outer or free end portion of the handle member 9 has disposed therethrou'gh abar III extendl ng desired" distances beyond opposite: sides of thehandle member 9 to provide convenientvhandgrasps for the user; 4 i3 Theelongated member 4' is flat and inisimulation of the neck and. headof a iowl, suclras .a duck, and said member 4' is or a thickness closely approaching the space between the lugs 2 and the-adjacent portions of the" side plates II yet having. tree rocking. movement upon. the pivot member 3..The pivot member 3 is disposed through. the: forward marginal portion of the member 4 and said pivoted extremity of. theoremher 4 is continued by a downwardly and inwardly directed. elongated tail-piece I2 01 a length to a sup- The wheel Ht substantially snugly extends between. the lower central portions of the side plates I? and has eccentric mounting. on. a supporting axle I15 around. whichsth'e wheel i4 freely rotates. Whenthe low point of the wheel M isruppermost, the member 4 will be at the limit of its rearward 8 swingingbmovement, as illustrated by full lines Figure l, and, of course, as thehigh point. of
the wheell I4 approaches the contact portion of l I the tail-piece H the member 4 will be swung. forupper portions of the plates I and interposed therebetween is a spacer block 6, the outer or top face of which is herein disclosed as substantially coplanar with the upp r straight edges (1 of the side plates I.
The central portion of this block 6 is provided therethrough with an inwardly inclined opening or socket I in which snugly fits the reduced end portion 8 of an elongated handle member 9. Extending through the block 6 and the portion 8 of the handle 9 is a holding shank I0 which, if desired, may also be directed through one of the side plates I.
ward lw, asindicated: by broken lines inFigura 1, thus giving an animated effect to the .toy when in transit. b
Each: of theside faces of the wheel. I4, which is of a disktype, has produced thereon in outline, as at I6, a number of .duck legs and feet so that, as the wheel or disk I 4 rotates, there will be given the effect of a walking fowl. i
Positioned between the upper marginal portions of the side plates I and of a length to extend a material distance therealong is an elongated member I] pivotally mounted between said side plates I by the pivot member I8. This pivot member I8 is positioned rearwardly of the-longitudinal center of the member I! and is carried by the side plates I of the body B. Y
The pivotmember I8 has mounted thereon at opposite sides of the member washers I9 to hold the member I'l against undue movement longitudinally of the pivot member l8. The upper longitudinal edge b of the member I1 is also straight and when the forward end portion of the member I1 is at the limit I"! the spacer of its downward swinging movement, said edge I) is substantially coplanar with the upper or top edges a of the side plates l.
The forward end portion of the member I1 is transversely enlarged to provide 2. depending contact member 20 which also serves to give added weight to the forward end portion of the member I! so that said end portion will swing downwardly by gravity for constant contact by the member 20 with the upper edge of the tailpiece l2 of the member 4. The contacting edge e of this member 20 is rounded while the upper contacting edge at of the tail-piece I2 is disposed on an inbow.
The contact of the member 20 with the tailpiece I2 results in said'tail-piece I 2 maintaining desired contact from above with the periphery of the wheel or disk [4 and, as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing, the dimensions of the tail-piece i2 and of the contact member 20 are such that when the low point of the wheel or disk 14 is uppermost, the edge 01 of the member I! will be substantially coplanar with the edges a of the side plates I.
It is believed to be obvious that as the device is trundled, the resultant rotation of the wheel or disk I4, as the high point moves upwardly, will result in a forward swinging movement of the member 4 and through the action of the tail-piece I2 will be effected an upward swinging movement of the member I! and,,of course, as the high point of the wheel or disk I l moves downwardly from uppermost position, the weight of the forward end portion ofv the member I! upon the tail-piece [2 will result in the member 4 swinging rearwardly and the forward end portion of the member I! swinging downwardly.
The member i? at points spaced therealong is provided with the upstanding object members 2| herein. disclosed as being successively of different sizes and in simulation of ducklings.
The toy in its complete assembly is one which creates the impression that a number of ducklings or other small fowl are riding on the back of a duck or other fowl, thus increasing the amusement value of the toy.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a wheeled figure toy con-- structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a body including two side plates, a rotatable ground-engaging member eccentrically mounted between said side plates at the lower central portion thereof, an outstanding elongated member extending and pivotally held between the forward upper portions of the side plates, 2. latterally directed tail-piece carried by the pivoted end portion of the elongated member and contacting the periphery of the wheel, a second elongated member disposed in a general direction lengthwise of the side plates and positioned therebetween, means for pivotally mounting said second elongated member to the side plates at a point rearwardly of the longitudinal center of said second elongated member, the forward end portion having gravity contact with the tailpiece of the first elongated member for maintaining said tail-piece in contact with the periphery.of the wheel, and an outstanding object member carried by the second elongated member.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body including two side plates, a rotatable ground-engaging member eccentrically mounted between said side plates at the lower portion thereof, an outstanding elongated member extending and pivotally held between the forward upper portions of the side plates, a laterally directed tail-piece carried by the pivoted end portion of the elongated member and contacting the periphery of the wheel, a second elongated member disposed in a general direction lengthwise of the side plates and positioned therebetween, means for pivotally mounting said second elongated member to the side plates at a point rearwardly of the longitudinal center of said second elongated member, the forward end portion having gravity contact with the tail-piece of the first elongated member for maintaining said tailpiece in contact with the periphery of the wheel, an outstanding object member carried by the second elongated member, a block secured between :the side plates at the upper rear portions thereof and rearwardly of the second elongated member, and an operating handle engaged with said block.
3. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the end portion of the second elongated member contacting with the tail-piece constitutes a member depending from the second elongated member and which also constitutes a weight to further assure the required gravital swinging movement of the second elongated member.
CHARLES S. OLSON.
