Description

` HAT Box .Filed Sept.- l, 1944 l 'willi/lfm IN VEN TOR.
rivm l Patented Apr. 1.7, 1945 UNITED "STATI-:s PATENT OFFICE:
Application September 1, 1944, Serial No. 552,253 1 claim. (ci. zoe-s) This invention relates to an article of manufacture, and specifically to a hatbox. AItsmain object is to provide a hatbox of the vsimplest possible construction, so as to save labor and material and also reduce its cost of manufacture to a minimum.` s
Another object of my invention is to provide a hatbox of transparent or translucent material, so that the hat may be visible from the outside.
A further Objectis to provide simple, easily manipulable means for simultaneously securing the box in the given shape and also for the attachment of a handle and keeping the lid in closed position.
` With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement 'of parts, as will be hereinafter described and defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, which constitutes part of this specification, andin which similar reference characters denote correspondin parts: 1 f Y Figure 1 is a top plan view of my box;
Figure 2 is a side elevation'thereof;
Figure 3 a cross-section on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 a cross-section on line 4 4 of Figurex 1; and
Figure 5 a section on line 5-'5 ofl Figure 2 seen in the direction of the arrows.
According to my invention,` the hatbox comprises a side Wall |0, a bottom and a lid I2, allv drical or polygonal shape, with the-opposite end edges |01, |02 loosely overlapping one another, as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 2, and also shown in Figure 4. The bottom is cut to conform in shape and width to the shape and the inner diameter of the said wall and -is affixed to the latter by a plurality of pins or threaded bolts |3 distributed uniformly around the circumference of said wall, with some of said bolts being passed through the lower parts of the overlapping edges of said wall, as shown in Figure 2.
The upper part of the overlapping edges |01,
The side wall I0 is formed of a single y sheet of said material by bending it into a cylinthe box may be of a desired color andvthat is adapted to extend diametrically over the outer face of the lid |2. 'I he lid |2 may be provided with a ruilled or otherwise ornamentally shaped I .annular flange |21.
The upper end of said side wall is provided with a pair of perforations Illa in each ofthe overlapping edges |01, |01, as Well as with a pair of perforations in the diametrically opposite side of said wall. Coinciding with those perforations |0a, Illa are perforations |2a, formed in the flange |21 vof the lid, and perforations |4a, in the free ends of the handle I4. These perforations serve as passages for straps or ribbons |5 which may belooped through them from the inside of said box and thev free ends of which may be tied on the outside into bows or the like.
These straps l5l thus at once secure the upper parts pf the overlapped .edges of the side wall in theircondition and hold the lid in closed position, and also serve as attachment means for the handle. For opening the box, the straps or ribbons on the side opposite the'overlapping portions of the wall may be untied and the lid swung upwardly, the tied ends ofthe other strap or ribbon I5 acting as hinges. t
It will be seen that the manufacture of the box, due to the construction above described, is thus rendered very simple, eliminating pasting or glueing and materials not readily available, while at the same time lending the box an extremely neat appearance.
` Since some modiiications may be made in the construction without kdeparting from the spirit of my invention, I do not Wish Ito restrict myself toy l the details Adescribed vand shown.
vWhat I claim is:-V
As an article of manufacture, a hatbox made ing edges are loosely overlapping one another, a
bottom mounted inside said wall, a plurality of fastening elements between said bottom and said wall distributed around the circumference of the |02 are adapted to be held in overlapped condition l through means which simultaneously serve for the attachment of a handle I4 and for holding the lid |2 in closed position, as will be presently described. 'I'he handle I4 may consist of a leather belt or the like that for embellishment of latter and some of which are passed through said overlapping edges to hold thewall in shape, a anged lid, a handle of exible material extend-v corresponding points',4 and flexible means adapted to be looped through said perforations so as to simultaneously join the upperparts of said overlapping edges'together, secure ,said handle and holdthe lid in closed position.- f vf
