Description

A C. WEINS COLLAPS IBLE MEGAPHONE Filed March 28, 1923 l atented Aug. 5, 1924.
ANTHGNY O, VJ'EINS, F E-ACINE, WISCONSIN.
COLLAPSIBLE MEGAPHONE.
Application filed March 28, 1323. Serial No. 628,341.
To all to/mm it m e; concern Be it known that l, Anrriorl'v C. Wants, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of l i isconsin, have invented certain new ant useful Improvements in Collapsible Megaphones, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to collapsible 1O megaphone and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character de scribed which can be folded easily and without damage and which can readily be restored to operative position. A further object of the invention is to pro vide such a megaphone with a handle and with means for holding the megaphone firmly in open or operative position.
Referring to the accoi-npanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the megaphone in collapsed position,
Figure 2 is a plan of the same with parts broken away,
Figure 3 is a perspective of the megaphone in operative position, and
Figure 4 a perspective of the megaphone collapsed.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a mouthpiece, preferably of aluminum or other metal, which has a central opening surrounded by an inturned central flange and an outer flange extending over flat side members 11 at one end thereof and serving to hold the side members in open position as indicated at Figure 1. The side members may be made of indurated fiber, 40 cardboard or other like material. The side members are connected by strips 12 of leather or other flexible material preferably all located externally of the megaphone, for better appearance, and are provided with 5 buttons 13, 14 and 15. A strap 16 is secured at one end by a rivet 17 to a side member 11. and at the other end by rivet 18 to mouth piece 10. Between its ends the strap passes under a guide 19 also secured to said side member. In the open position of the megaphone a snap 20 engages the button 14; while a snap 21 on a short strap secured to the flange of the mouthpiece at its opposite side engages the button 15. In this way it will be seen that the parts of the megaphone are securely held together while the hand holding the strap 16 will by reason of the guide 19 be prevented from disengaging the snap 20. On the contrary the tendency is to pull the strap 16 and tighten the hold of the snap 20 on the button 141-.
In order to collapse the megaphone snaps 21 and 20 are released and the parts are folded in the relation shown in Figure l after which the strap 16 is drawn taut and the mouth piece 10 is folded down on the opposite side of the device bringing the snap 21 into position over the button 13 to which it is secured. This holds the parts securely in the position shown in gure lforming a flat package which can be placed in the pocket or other receptacle and be practically safe from injury. It will be seen that either in the folded or half folded position the device may conveniently be utilized as a fan, should it be desired to make such use of it.
While I have shown the device as flatsided, this being the most effective and durable, I do not limit myself thereto, as curved side pieces may be desirable in some instances. The device shown in the drawings and described in the specification may also. as will be obvious to those skilled in the art. be changed in other respects, by increase in the number of sides, and may be other wise modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. the true scope of which is shown in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is:
1. A collapsible megaphone com n'ising side members, hinges connecting them at adjacent edges, a mouth piece having an an nular polygonal flange adapted to fit closely over the side members at one end thereof, and a circular flange adapted to fit into and tangentially contact the side members, said mouth piece holding the side members in open position, and means to secure the mouth piece in place, substantially as set forth.
2. A collapsible megaphone comprising side members, a month piece having a polygonal flange adapted to fit over said side members to hold them in open position and a circular flange adapted to fit into and tangentially contact the side members, a strap secured to one of said side members and to the mouth piece and serving as a handle tor the megaphone, substantially as set forth.
3. A collapsible megaphone comprising side members, a mouth piece having a flange adapted to hold said side members in open position, a strap secured to one of said side members and to the mouth piece and serving as a handle for the megaphone, means for fastening the strap to the side member closely adjacent the mouth piece and means at the opposite side of the megaphone "for attaching the month piece releasably to said side member of the megaphone, substantially as set forth.
4:. A collapsible megaphone comprising flat side members, a month piece having a flange adapted to hold said side members in open position, a strap secured to one of said. side members and to the mouth piece and serving as a handle for the megaphone, a guide on said side member adjacent the mouth piece and a button and snap located one on the strap and the other on the side member beneath it between the guide and the mouth piece whereby tension on the handle portion of the strap serves to hold said snap in engagement, substantially set forth.
5. A collapsible megaphone comprising flat side members hinged together at their edges, a mouth piece adapted in one position to hold the side members in open position, a strap secured to one side member and 'to the mouth piece, a button on the opposite side piece, a. snap on the mouthpiece adapted to be engaged over said button and a button on an intermediate side member over which said snap is adapted to engage in the folded position of the megaphone, substantially as set forth.
6. A collapsible megaphone comprising flat. side members, a handle secured to one side member and having a mouthpiece atlixed thereto, said mouthpiece having an external polygonal flange: adapted to fit over the ends of the side members and having an internal arcuate flange adapted to tit into the ends of said members for cooperatively holding them in operative position.
7. A collapsible megaphone comprising flat side members, a handle secured to one side member and having a mouthpiece atiixed thereto, said mouthpiece having an external polygonal flange adapted to fit over the ends of the side members and having an internal arcuate flange adapted to fit into the ends of said side members for cooperat-ively holding them in operative position, and means opposite said handle tor holding said mouthpiece in position.
8. A collapsible me aphone comprising flat side members, a handle having one end tired to one of said side members, and being longitudinally slidably and releasably cured thereto adjacent its opposite end, a mouthpiece secured to the last mentioned end of said handle, said mouthpiece being adapted to tit over the ends of said side members.
9. A collapsible megaphone comprising flat side n'iembers, a handle having one end fixed to one of said side members and being longitudinally slidablv and releasably secured thereto adjacent its opposite end, a mouthpiece secured to the last mentioned end ot said handle, said mouthpiece being adapted to lit. over the ends of said side members, and means on said mouthpiece opposite said handle for holding said mouthpiece in position.
it). It collapsible megaphone comprising 'l'lat side mcn'ibe s, a handle having one end lined to one or sa longitudinally slidably and relcasably sccurcd thereto adjacent its opposite end, a mouthpiece secured to the last mentioned end of said handle, said mouthpiece having an external poly on'al tlange adapted to lit over the ends oi the side members and having an internal arcuate tlange adapted to tit into the ends of said side members for cooperatively holding them in operative position.
11. A collapsible megaphone comprising tiat side members, a handle having one end is-ted to one ol' said side members and being longitndinally slidably and releasably secured thereto adjacent its opposite end, a mouthpiece secured to the last mentioned end of said handle, said mouthpiece having an external polygonal 'l'langc adapted to lit over the ends of the side members and having an internal arcuate flange adapted to lit into the ends of said side members for cooperatii-ely holding them in operative posi tion, and means on said mouthpiece opposite said handle for holding said mouthpiece in position.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set n'iv hand and seal at Racine, Visconsin, this t. nty-third day of ivlarch, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-three.
