Definitions
- My invention consists in giving greater elasticity to one of the nibs or divisions of a metallic pen than to the other. I may obtain this unequal elasticity by making a slit in the one nib or half of the pen divided by the central slit, or I may apply a slit to both halves, these slits being different in their form and effects, whereas ordinary pens have only the central slit; or, if with a slit in each half, these slits are similarly shaped, and therefore each half operates in the same way.
- Figure 1 shows a steelpen'with a slit in one half or division only; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show pens'with a slit in each half or nib.
- I may make more than one slit in each half or nib of the pen, but the slits in each half will always differ in form and effect.
- a writing-pen one nib whereof is constructed so as to be more elastic than its companion nib, substantially as described.

No. 237,184. Patented Feb. 1,1881.
ETI'IJioldfi, W I q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH W. HOLDT, OF BERLIN, PRUSSIA, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO PERRY j & G0,, LIMITED OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,184, dated February 1, 1881.
Application filed December 1, 1880. (No model.) Patented in England July 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH WILHELM HOLDT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the city of Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia, and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Pens with Unequally Elastic N ibs, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
My invention consists in giving greater elasticity to one of the nibs or divisions of a metallic pen than to the other. By giving unequal elasticity to the two halves or nibs of the pen formed by the central longitudinal slit I obtain great ease and flexibility of the point of the pen, permitting the hand to guide it with less fatigue, and make finer up and heavier down strokes. Further, the pen will last longer. 1
The accompanying sheet of drawings shows four pens of various forms, but all embodying my invention.
Figure 1 shows a steelpen'with a slit in one half or division only; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show pens'with a slit in each half or nib.
In all the figures, slit, by which I give greater elasticity to one half, division, or nib of the pen than to the other;'and it will be seen that where an ordinary slit, b, is used my slit or exceeds it in length for this purpose. 40
I may make more than one slit in each half or nib of the pen, but the slits in each half will always differ in form and effect.
Having now described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is or may be performed, I desire it to be distinctly understood that I do not limit myself to any particular form or dimension of slit, but that What I claim as secured to me by the hereinbefore in part recited Letters Patent, is-
A writing-pen one nib whereof is constructed so as to be more elastic than its companion nib, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRIEDRICH WILHELM HOLD'I.
