Description

5 UNITED STATES.
PATENT Ormea.
ALBERT TROLLOPE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
STOVE-PIPE FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,921, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed May 8, 1880. (Model.)
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT TRoLLoPE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the secure andelose fastening of stove-pipes to their wallholes, thereby securing a certain and safe connection and avoiding all danger from their falling, and, by closing all unnecessary opening, improving the draft.
The invention consists of a circular metallic wall-plate with a circular opening in its cenis attached, by bolts and nuts, an adjustable metallic band of the same shape and size as the flan ge, and in alike position as to the other halfof the opening. It is by means of this band, when fastened in its place, that the pipe is rmly secured to the plate and chimney hole. T-wo iron straps fastened opposite to each other on the inside rim of the plate extend inwardly, so that when the plate is against the wall their ends reach into the flue of the chimney. On the ends of those straps are adjustable p ieces of L shape, secured by bolts, in the cross-limb of which are thumbscrews, which, when adjusted, press against the side of the iiue, and thus draw the plate closely and securely to the wall. An outside metallic covering, Whose cross-section may be of ogee or any suitable shape, is fastened by lugs which enter and are pressed into wedgeshaped recesses in the plate, and is designed to give a suitable finish to the improvement.
In the drawings, similar letters indicate like parts.
Figure lis a perspective view ofthe device with the outside covering off. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section, showing the device attached to the chimney.
In the drawings, A A represent the wallplate; B, the flange around half the opening; G, the adjustable flange, which is secured to the flange B by the bolts c a', which pass through suitable pieces' 0r flanges, b b c c', at
5othe ends of the iiange B and band C. This devices, constitute a clamp by which the stovepipe is firmly held in position. From the outside center of the band C projects a piece or lug, b, which plays loosely inside a couple of small prongs or hooks Which rise from the plate, the object being to keep the band in its place near the plate. D D are metallic straps fastened to the plate A A by the nuts e e', to the ends of which straps are attached the adjustable L-shaped pieces E E, by bolts through the slots ff', near the ends of the straps, and by reason of which they may be lengthened or shortened to suit the varying thickness of chimneys. Through the end of the adjustable angular extensions E E are set-screws h h', pointing inwardly toward the plate, and which, screwed in place, press against the side of the chimney-Hue F F, and thereby draw the wall- `plate AA close and securely against the wall.
G represents a rose-plate, which is attached to the wall-plate by means of the lugs z' i, which project inwardly from the rim, and which are made to enter and fasten into the wedgeshaped recesses K K', which are formed for that purpose on the Wall-plate. The projections m m are simplyintended for rests for the rose-plate when in place.
The method of fastening the device to the wall and to the pipe is simple,`and it is easily done. The bolt which'fastens oneof the straps to the plate is iirst loosened, so that it may have play enough to enter the chimney-hole. When the plate is against the wall, see whether the adjustable angular extensions E E are of the right length 5 if not, adjust them, put device back in place, and tighten the boltwhich secures the strap. The adjusters arm may then be placed in through the pipe-hole, and the set or thumb screws screwed up until they press rmly against the wall. The pipe is then put in place, the rose-plate G beingrst slipped over it, and the adjustable band bolted firmly down in place around the pipe, which is thus securely and rightly fastened. The rose-plate is then slipped to its place and turned till securely fastened.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a stove-pipe fastener, the combination, with a wall-plate having a pipe-opening, one portion of which is provided with an outwardly-projecting ange, ot' an independent band ICQ which extends about the remaining portion of the opening, and screw-bolts which connect both extremities of said harige, respectively, with the corresponding extremities of' said band, substantially as set forth.
2. In a stove-pipe fastener, the combination, with a wallplate having one portion of its pipe-opening provided with an outwardly-projecting ange, of a band which extendsabout the unanged portion ot the opening, and screw-bolts which connect together corresponding ends of the flange and band, said band being provided with a ing which engages with two prongs projecting from the wall-plate, substantially as set forth.
3. In a stovepipe fastener, the combination, with a plate adapted to tit against the wall, and a clamp extending in outward projection about the pipe-opening, of a roseplate which covers said clamp and wall-plate, and fastening devices which detachably secure the roseplate to the Wall-plate, substantially as set forth.
4. In a stove-pipe fastener, the combination, witha plate adapted to fit against the wall, and a clamp which extends in outward projection about the pipe-opening, of a rose-plate which covers the clamp and wall plate, said roseplate having its rim provided with inwardlyprojecting lugs, which pass through recesses formed in the wall-plate and engage with the rear side of thelatter, substantially as set forth.
5. In a stove-pipe fastener, the combination, with a wall-plate provided with metallic straps adapted to tit within the due, of angular extensions secured to the inner extremities of said straps, and screws supported by said extensions and adapted to have end bearing against the inner side of the chimney-wall, substantially as set forth.
6. In a stove-pipe fastener, the combination, with a wall'plate provided with metallic straps which extend within the ue, of angular extensions secured in longitudinal adjustment to the inner extremities of the straps, and screws supported in said angular extensions and adapted to have end bearing against the inner side of the chimney-wall, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereoflsign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT TROLLOPE.
