Application March 31, 1947, Serial No. 738,450
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a safety clamping device for securing stove pipe in operative position with a chimney flue opening.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified device readily adjustable to accommodate itself to flue openings through Walls of varying thicknesses and applicable from the exterior of the flue opening to effectively lock the stove pipe in operative position.
Further objects will more particularly appear in the course of the following detailed description.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a stove pipe section in locked operative position with respect to a flue;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal cross section taken through Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal cross section similar to Figure 1, showing a modified form of the invention.
In accordance with the present invention it is proposed to fixedly secure the end of a stove pipe with respect to a flue opening by means of a simple clamping device operable from outside the flue to effectively engage opposed portions of the margin of the flue opening, the clamping device being adjustably associated with the stove pipe.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 an elongated clamping member 1 is provided having a terminal offset hook 2 at one end and an elongated slot 3. An adjustable pipe embracing ring 6 is provided, the ends of which are out-turned at l to provide spaced lugs connected as by a bolt 9 by means of which the ring 6 can be adjusted longitudinally of the pipe P, but held in fixed position at the point selected.
Secured to the ring 6 as by rivets 5 is an L- shaped bracket member 4, the up-turned leg of which is provided with a through-threaded orifice adapted to receive a threaded bolt 10.
The bolt 9 passes through an un-threaded orifice in the horizontal leg of the bracket member 4, through the slot 3 in the elongated hook memher and through a suitable orifice punched in the stovepipe by means of which bolt 9 the longitudinal clamping member I can be adjusted longitudinally of the pipe P, depending upon the thickness of the wall of the flue F.
The assembly of this type of the invention is obvious, the clamping member I being inserted through the flue opening so its offset hook 2 engages the inner wall of the chimney flue, whereupon the stovepipe P is inserted into the flue opening, the conventional collar C adjusted and the ring 6 slipped over the associated stovepipe and clamping member I and secured in proper position as by bolt 8. Thereafter the bolt 9 is tighten-ed, locking the clamping member I and the bracket 9 in adjusted position, after which by turning screw [0 pressure is brought to bear against the outer face of the flue wall in opposition to the offset hook 2, thus securely locking the pipe P in position.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3, the elongated clamping member I is slightly bent to permit its being used on the interior of the pipe P and is associated with the pipe P and the bracket 4 by one or more bolts 9 which pass through suitable unthreaded orifices in the bracket 4 and the pipe P, and through the slot 3 in the clamping member I. The application of this type of the device is similar to that of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Various modifications in the proportions and precise shape of the parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but within the scope of the present invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. Stovepipe fastener comprising an elongated clamping member formed with an offset hook and an elongated slot, an L-shaped member having a threaded orifice through one leg and an orifice in the other leg, a bolt passing through the orifice in said other leg, the stovepipe and said slot in the clamping member and a threaded bolt operable in the threaded orifice in the L-shaped member to act in opposition to said offset hook.
2. Device for securing a stovepipe in a flue opening comprising a clamping member having an offset hook mounted on the stovepipe adjacent its end for longitudinal adjustment with respect to the pipe, and a screw clamp mounted on the clamping member in longitudinal alignment with the first mentioned clamping member, the offset hook and screw clamp arranged to engage opposed marginal portions of the fiue opening.
