PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. DARNELL, OF CLAYTON, MICHIGAN.
PIPE CONNECTION.
Application filed April 23, 1924.
To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, VVILLIABI H. DARNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in pipe couplings and more particularly relates to an improved stove pipe connection.
The invention has for its primary aim and object to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein a pair of sections are employed for detachable engagement with each other, one of the sections serving to lock the other section in engagement with the stove pipe thimble while acting in conjunction with the inner engaged ends of the sections is an improved clamping and retaining band for clamping the sections against movement relative to each other and relative to the thimble and chimney in which the thimble is mounted.
It is a more specific object of the present invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the clamping band is of novel construction while associated with the meeting ends thereof is an improved clamping fastener for retaining the band in clamping relation relative to the other or adjacent parts while the body of the band is so shaped as to be adjustably engaged on the engaged ends of the sections so as to insure of an effective mounting of all of the parts in position regardless of the thickness of the chimney in which the thimble is mounted.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a parthereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor Serial No. 708,599.
Similar characters of reference are em- I ployed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanymg drawings, there is illustrated a chimney 1 having an opening 2 therein in which is mounted a thimble 3.
Disposed through the thimble 3 is an open sleeve 4 one end of which is formed at opposite points with outwardly extending lips 5 designed for engagement with one .end edge of the thimble while the opposite portion is corrugated to provide substantial threads 6 and this corrugated or threaded portion is positioned exteriorly of the sleeve and the chimney. Engaged within the corrugated or threaded portion 6 is a correspondingly corrugated and threaded portion 7 of stove pipe 8 the latter being slightly tapered at its corrugated portion so that when the said pipe 8 is engaged in the manner described the open sleeve 4 will be spread and maintained in frictional engagement with the thimble 3.
In order to insure the retention of the sleeve at in engagement with the thimble and to insure of the maintenance of the sleeve and pipe in engagement with each other so that they cannot move relative to each other or to the chimney 1, improved clamping means is employed in the present instance consisting of an open band 9 corrugated as at 10 correspondingly to the corrugations 6 and 7, said band being telescop-ed about the pipe 8 and slid thereon so as to be arranged in engagement'with the corrugated portions 6 and 7 of the sleeve and pipe respectively, subsequent, of course, to the proper engagement of the threaded or corrugated portions 6 and 7 relative to each other. The band is formed with an annular and out wardl extending flange 11 which is arrang against the adjacent face of the 1 metal being folded upon itself to provide a nated sleeve or ear l3 inwhich is swingably engaged one end of the loop 14 while the free portions are secured to the outer surface near one meeting end of the band through the instrumentality of suitable fasteners 15. Another attaching member generally designated 16 is provided being formed from a single piece of metal which is first cut out to form a rectangular opening 17 and subsequently folded upon itself to provide spaced sleeves 18 while the free portions are secured by suitable fasteners 19 to the outer surface of the band 9 near the other meeting edge thereof. A hook generally desigy the numeral 20 is employed being formed from a single piece of wire the terminals of which constitute trunnions 21- which are swingably-engaged in the spaced sleeves 18, By this construction subsequent to the arranging of the pipe and sleeve in the properly adjusted position and the proper securing of the band about the pipe and sleeve, the hook isengaged within the loop and is subsequently swung rearwardly and swung downwardly into a locked engagement, thus drawing the band into frictional engagement with the pipe and sleeve to prevent accidental movement of the pipe and sleeve with respect to each other and to the chimney.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the character described the combination with a chimney wall. having an opening and a thimhle mounted through the opening, of an open sleeve telescoped within the thimble, lips projecting outwardly from one end of the sleeve and engaged with the adjacentedge of the thimble, the opposite portion of the sleeverbeing extended and corrugated, a pipe section having one end portion corrugated and telescopieally and adjustably engaged within the corrugated portion of the sleeve for slightly spreading the firstsection into; binding engagement with the thimble, an open, corrugated band adjustably engaged about the corrugated portions of the said sections, a chimney engaging flange projecting from one edge of the band for cooperating with the lips, on the o posite ends of the sleeve, and means for re easably clamping the band from clamping engagement with the said sleeve and pipe section.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature. 7
WILLIAM H. DARNELL
