It is an object of this invention to provide a hinge construction suitable for toilet seats and covers which is formed entirely, of plastic material so as to lend itself more readily toiharrnonious color combinations and to obviate the unsightly corrosion which is inevitable where the hinge parts are made of metal.

An additional object of this invention seats and covers inwhich the seat and covercarried hinge parts are provided with integral trunnions received in bearing sockets formed in the supporting standards or pedestals on the bowl. l r i A further object of this invention is to provide a hinge construction of the character described which isdesigned to relievethe trunnions ofthe hinges of substantially all "strain incidental to the application of weight onto the lowered seat and cover, and toeliminate shearin stresses on any part ofthe hinge structure.

6 With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, thisinvention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described-and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the preciseembodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.

The accompanying drawings illustrate several complete examples of the physicalembodiments @of the invention constructed in accordancewith the best modes so far devised forthe practical application of the principles thereof, and in which: 1

Referring now particularly to. the accompanying drawings, in which. like numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 3 designates the bowl of a toilet providedwith the conventional seat 5 and cover I.

Allof these parts are formed of plastic material so that they may be provided in colors to match anyidesired color scheme. The use of plastic material also overcomes the objectionable discoloration caused by corrosion to which metal hinge parts are: subject.

The bearing standards are secured to the top surface ll: of the bowl at. the customary location of the hinge by means of studs l2 embedded in the bearing standards and passing through holes in the flange of the bowl to have nuts (not shown) threaded thereon and drawn up against the undersurface of the flange.

These bearing standards asstated are similar and opposite. They haverelatively flat inner faces 3| opposedto each other and flat outer faces ,32 substantially parallel with the inner "faces, said inner and outer faces extending perpendicularly from the top surface I I of the bowl. Bearing sockets 33 enter the body of each of the standards from both theirinner and outer faces and are all in line with each otherso that r they lie on a common horizontal axis extending transversely across the rear of the bowl, the

sockets of each standards preferably being the oppositeends of transverse bores.

Thecover hinge member34is provided with a flat attaching portion 35 which is secured to the underside of the cover by screws or other fastening means and has an armfifi directed angularly rearwardly. from the attaching portion to extend a. short distance downwardly therefrom in the. lowered position of the cover.

These seat hinge members each have an arm 4| directed angularly from the attaching portion thereof in a direction to project substantially perpendicularly upwardly toward the hinge axis when the seat is in lowered position. Integral trunnions 42 project from these arms toward each other and their adjacent bearing standards to be received in the bearing sockets opening to the outer faces thereof.

When the-seat is-lin its lowered, positiontshown in Figure -2, we ightimparted to the (seat issupported in such a mannerthat the trunnions of the seat hinge members are relieved of all strain or shearing stress. This desirable result is achieved through the provision of pads or bosses 83 projecting outwardly from the zoutersfaces of the bearing standards and resting on the top face H of the bowl.

From the foregoingvdescriptionrtaken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it :will be readily apparent that the novel'idesign'aofthe hinge construction of this invention makes .the use of plastic material entirely practical .'.and feasible so that all the advantageswhich attend the use of this new material may be fully realized.

What I claim as my invention is:

1.
