This invention relates to card display devices adapted for attachment to containers, such as spectacle casesandthe like, or for personal wearing use as a monogram ornament, this invention being an adaptation and improvement on my prior application dated January 5, 1943, Serial Whereas the invention described in my said former application was particularly adapted for use as an attachment in association with spectacle cases, the present invention, inaccordance with one of its objects, is-to enable it' to be used both in association with cases and also as a wearable personal item in theform of a brooch, lavalliere wrist band, or the like.

And in the last-mentioned aspect of my invention, itis-a further important object to provide a unit whereby, with the use of readily interchangeable parts, the'device may be, fabricated either'for use-in connection with cases, or for personal wearing use.

In many forms of containers, particularl spectacle cases, the interior of the cover contains a lining of'velvetor some other similar material. Where it becomes necessary-to cut an aperture into the cover of such a case in order to accommodate a suitable card retainer, the lining generally becomes frayed atthe peripheral edges of the aperture, particularly. if the said cut peripheral edges of the lining are left free. It is within the contemplation of myinvention to. obviate this danger by providing means-of holding the said out edges firmly pressed against the inner surface of the cover, to prevent any tendency of said edges to fray.

It is a further object. of my invention to providea firm attachment for acard retainer when used in association with a case, so that there will be no relative movement between the retainer and the cover.

Another object of this invention is to enable a device of the aforementioned class to be readily adapted for use with cases having covers of different thicknesses.

Other objects, features and advantages will appear from-the drawings and the description hereinafter given.

Regardless of the use for which my invention is employed, its basic elements consist of a retainer member I5, an inscription or monogram-bearing card. it, a backing member I1, and a holding frame I8. These elements are used in combination with an intermediate member l9 which may be a portion of the cover 20 of a spectacle case 2| or of a Vanity case, compact or other container, or it may be an ornamental rim 22 (Figures '8 and 9) when used as a wearing ornament. In the preferred form of my invention, the retainer member [5 is preferablyv made of transparent material, such as a suitableplastic, and contains a front panel 23 having a marginal portion or flange 24 adapted forengagement with the said intermediate member Ill. The retainer member also contains rearwardly extending

25, 26, 21 and 28, said Walls being disposed inwardly from the edges of the panel and forming a laterally enclosed chamber 29. The inscriptionbearin card l6 contains at the front surface thereof an inscription or monogram visible through the front panel 23. It is also within the contemplation of my invention to employ instead of a single card IS, a plurality of such cards H5 in adjacent relation, where that would be more expedient. Bearing up against the rear of card [6 is the backing member I! which is adapted to hold the card in position against the front panel.

Said backing member may be either transparent or opaque and 'of-any suitable material. If transparent, it may serve to visibly show any printed matter that may be present on the rear surface of cardlS. If said backing member] T is opaque,

it may, .if desired, have printed matter thereon, such as an identifying label.

The holding frame i8 is preferably, though not necessarily, made of the same material as the retainer member I5. The said frame is preferably rectangular in form with a central aperture 30 through which the

When the constituent parts of my device are in proper assembled relation, the saidlugs 3| and 32 are in engagement with the rear side of backing member ll so as to hold said backing member and the card 16 in proper position relative to the panel 23. It is also preferred that the backing member I! b of flexible material, so that it may be bowed for positioning between the opposite lugs 3| and 32 before being assembled in place, and then released so as to enable it toiassume its final assembled position in front or said lugs (Figure 3). a

The intermediate member I9 is flanked by said holding frame 18 and the flange 24 of the retainer member 15 to hold the constituent elements firmly and immovably in proper relative position with respectto each other. The holding frame l8 may be adhesively securedto the

In association with the lid of a spectacle case, such as lid 20, a velvet or plush lining 35 is generally employed on the inside thereof. 'When an aperture 36 is cut into thelidfor the purpose of receiving the retainer member l5, it frequently happens that the peripheral portion 33 of the lining becomes frayed, as aforesaid, unless provision is made to protectthe material. Ac-

cording to the construction for my invention hereinabove described, the holding frame I8 is in pressing engagement with the portion of lining 35 adjacent the aperture 36, thereby protecting peripheral edge 31 of thelining and maintaining it permanently and immovably in place between frame I8, lid 20 and

It will further be observed that the holding frame [8 not only constitutes an easily assembled and positive holding means for the backing member H, but also serves as a means of maintaining the retainer member I in, fixed and immovable engagement with the intermediate member l9. 2 Should it become necessary to assemble the retainer member l5 and associated parts upon a very thin intermediate member 38 (Figure 6) I the same elements hereinabove referred to may card l6 and'holding frame 18 are used. The

intermediate member 22, howeven'consists of an ornamental or colored part which constitutes an ornamental rim or frame for theentire device. The backing member 40 is} substantially like backing member l1, except that it is provided with suitable attaching means, such as the pivotal pin 41 and clasp 42 (Figures 8 and 9). The unit so assembled can obviously serve as a lapel pin or brooch. And by employing the backing member 43 (Figure 10) containing two rings 44 and a chain member 45, the device may be used as a lavalliere. And if the backing member 46 of Figure 11 is used, containing holes 41 through which theband 48 extends, the device can be used as a wrist band.

It is thus apparent, that by merely substituting an intermediate member 22 for the member 23 of Figure 3, and the backing members .40 or 43 or 46 for the backing member 11, the essential elements of my device can be employed for a wearing unit instead of for use in association v with a case.

It is understood that the embodiments above described and shown in the drawings are illustrative of my invention and not employed by way of limitation, inasmuch as numerous changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of this invention.

I claim:

1. In a card display device of the class described, a retainer member comprising a transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardly from the panel and containing a plurality of :recessed portions therein, an inscription bearing card within said walled means and adjacent said front panel, a backing member within said Walled means and in engagement with the rear of said card for holding it againstthe panel, a holding frame adjacent said walled means and in holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, said holding frame containing a plurality of lugs extending through said recesse'd portions, and an intermediate mem ber disposed outside of said walled means and positioned between said panel and said holding frame.

2. In a card display device of the class described, a retainermember comprising a trans-r parent front panel, Walled means extending rearwardly from the panel and disposed inwardly from the edges of the panel to form .an overlapping flange, said walledmeans containing 'a pluralityfof recessed portions therein, an. insc'rip tion-bearing card within said'walle'dmeans and adjacent said front panel, "a backing member within said walled meansand in engagement with the rear of said card'for holding it against the panel,'a holding frame surrounding said walled. means and containing a plurality of lugs extend-" ing inwardly through said, recessed portions and into holding engagementfwith the .rear of said backing member, and an intermediate member disposed outside of' said walled means and posi tionedbetween said panel and said holding frame. 3. In a card display deviceof the class described, a retainer member comprisinga'transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardly from the panel to form "a laterally enclosed chamber, said walled means being disposed inwardly from the edges 'of' the panelto form' an Overlapping flange, and containing a plurality of channel-like recesses therein," an inscriptionbearing card within said walled means and adjacent said frontpanel, a back'ing member within said walled means and in engagement with the rear of said card for holding it against the panel,

, a holding frame embracing saidwalled means and secured thereto, saidholding framecontaining a plurality of lugs extending through said recesses into said chamber and into holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, and an intermediate member disposed outside of said walled means and positioned between said panel and said hOldiIlg frame.

4. In a card display device of the class described, a retainer member comprising a transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardly from the panel and disposed inwardly from the edges of the panel to form an overlapping flange and containing a plurality of channel-like recesses at opposite portions thereof, an inscription-bearing card within said walled means and adjacent said front panel, a flexible backing member within said walled means and in engagement with the rear of said card for holding it against the panel, a holding frame embracing said walled means and adhesively secured thereto, said holding frame containing a plurality of inwardly extending lugs disposed within said recesses and extending into said chamber and into holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, and an intermediate member disposed outside said walled means and positioned between said flange and said holding frame and adhesively secured to said holding frame.

In a card display device of the class described, a retainer member comprising a transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardly from the panel to form a laterally enclosed chamber, said walled means being disposed inwardly from the edges of the panel to form an overlapping flange and containing a plurality of channel-like recesses therein, an inscriptionbearing card within said walled means and adjacent said front panel, a backing member within said walled means and in engagement with the rear of said card for holding it against the panel, a holding frame embracing said walled means and secured thereto, said holding frame containing a plurality of lugs extending through said recesses into said chamber into holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, an intermediate member disposed outside of said walled means and in engagement with the said flange, and a shim surrounding said walled means and disposed between and in engagement with said frame and said intermediate member,

In a card display device of the class described, a retainer member comprising a transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardl from the panel and disposed inwardly from the edges of the panel to form an overlapping flange, said walled means containing a plurality of recessed portions therein, an inscriptionbearing card within said walled means and adjacent said front panel, a backing member within said walled means and in engagement with the rear of said card for holding it against the panel, fastening means secured to the rear side of the backing member and adapted for attachment to the person of a wearer, a holding frame surrounding said walled means and containing a plurality of lugs extending inwardly through said recessed portions and into holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, and an intermediate member disposed outside of said walled means and positioned between said panel and said holding frame.

7. In a card display device, the combination according to claim 6, the intermediate member constituting a frame-like rim, whereby it may be employed as an ornamental element.

8. In a card display device of the class described, a retainer member comprising a transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardly from the panel and containing a plurality of recessed portions therein, an inscription-bearing card within said walled means and adjacent said front panel, a backing member within said walled means and in engagement with the rear of said card for holding it against the panel, and a holding frame adjacent said walled means and in holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, said holding frame containing a plurality of lugs extending through said recessed portions.

9. In combination with the lid of a case of the class described, a retainer member comprising a transparent front panel, walled means extending rearwardly from the panel and disposed inwardly from the edges of the panel to form an overlapping flange, an inscription-bearing card Within said Walled means and adjacent said front panel, a holding frame surrounding said walled means and in holding engagement with the rear of said backing member, and an intermediate member constituting a portion of said lid and containing an inner lining, said intermediate member with the lining thereon containing an aperture therein, the walled means of said retainer extending through said aperture, said intermediate member being positioned between said flange and said holding frame, the frame being in engagement with said lining at the peripheral edges thereof.
