Claims.

This invention relates to an improvedcheck strap for looms which is easily 4placed in position without the necessity of removing the picker stick, and which isy so constructed that when replaceable parts become worn, the same can be replaced, thus providingV a substantially new check strap by the replacement. of worn parts.

It is an object of this invention tok provide a check strap for looms having a replaceable wearing surface disposed at each end of the check strap for receiving the impact of the picker stick, which impact receiving surfaces can easily be removed and new ones replaced whenthe impact. receiving surfaces or members become worn or damaged in any way.`

It is another objectfof-this invention to provide a check strap having means'for frictionally mounting-the same .to resist the impact of the picker stick in both directions, and the ends .of the check strap having impact receiving surfaces which can easily be renewed. e

Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear asV the description proceeds, when takenv in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of the lay of a loomV showing my check strap attached thereto;

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view, that is lookingv upward at the bottom of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the check strap removed from the loom, and showing a slightly modified wear receiving surface at one end thereof, and showingr the wear receiving surface member removed from the other end thereof;

Figure 4 is a view looking from the inside and towards the left at the left-hand portion of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 5 5 in Figure 4;

Figure 6 is a view of the right-hand portion of Figure showing a slightly modified form of impact receiving member or bumper block;

Figure 'l is a view similar to Figure 6. but showing another modified form of bumper block.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral l'l indicates the lay of the loom having a conventional race plate H and a binder l2 together with a conventional 'picker stick I3 having a picker .le on the upper end thereof. The lay of the loom has a longitudinally disposed slot i5 in which the picker stick is adapted to have movement. To each side of the lay of the loom, there is secured a bracket 22 having a pair of downwardly projecting legs It and l1 having out-turned lips at their lower ends. The horizontal portion of the bracket 22 has a bolt I8 penetratingv the same and ther vertical portion of the bracket v22 has bolts I9 for securing the brackets to the side of the layof the loom. The

bolt I8 penetrates a hole in bracket 22 and a slot' 20 in bracket 2l for adjusting the bracket 2li linwardly or outwardly. The bracket 2l has a down'- wardly depending leg 23 provided with an inturned lip at the lower end thereof, the inturned and out-turned portionsV at the bottom of the legs I6, l1, and 23 serving to prevent downward movement of a check strap 25 which is adapted to be frictionally disposed in a circuitous path between the legs lli, Il, and 23. y f l The check strappat its endgnext to the edge of'. cloth beingV woven., has ,notches 26 and 2l in the, upper inner edge thereof and notches 28 and 29 in the lower inner. edge thereof which are adapted to confine a replaceable wear receiving member 3i) such as a strap of leather or canvas. The wear receiving member 30 is bi-furcated at each end, and the ends 3J and 32 overlap each other, and arersecured together by means of a rivetror brad `33.

The right-hand end of the check strap v25 which is the end most remote froml the. loom, has a plurality of holes 24 which are penetrated by a bolt 35, which has suitable washers 36 on each end thereof, with a nut 31 on the free end of the bolt, and disposed between the free ends of the Vcheck strap L25Y is a bumper or'wearing block 38 which is made of a plurality of layers of leather or other suitable material, the form shown in Figure 2 having the

39 and 40 extending outwardly which are glued to and cover the inner end of the outer laminations to provide a sloping surface to guide the picker stick into the deepest portion of the notch formed in the bumper block.

In Figure 3, a slightly modified form of bum-per block or wearing member is shown in which a block of any suitable material is adapted to have a wear receiving surface such as a strip of leather or canvas 46 secured between the inner surfaces of the lug strap and the block 45, and then being led around and following the contour of the notched end of the block to provide a wear receiving surface against which the picker stick strikes when a shuttle is received into the shuttle box.

In Figure 6, a slightly modified form of the bumper block or wear receiving surface at the outer end of the check strap is shown. Here a suitable block .such as rubber or the like, indicated by reference character 5D is shown. This has slanting shouldered portions 5I leading into` a notched portion 52 into which the picker stick is adapted to fit, as the shuttle is received into the shuttle box.

It is thus seen that the notches 26 to 29 inclusive hold the replaceable wearing member 30 in position and prevent its creeping around, and holds it in a place Where the picker stick will engage it as a shuttle is expelled from the shuttle box. It is also seen that a wear receiving member or bumper block is disposed at the other end of the check strap for checking the travel of the picker stick when a shuttle is received into the shuttle box. This wear receiving member or bumper block is shown in a variety of forms, but in all forms, it is easily replaceable when worn or damaged to a point beyond a serviceable condition.

In Figure 7 a substantially triangular shaped bumper' block 55 is shown. This block 55 can bel made of rubber, leather, or other suitable material. It is disposed between the free ends of thestrap 25 and has a flat surface against which the Apicker stick strikes when a shuttle is received into the shuttle box. It is secured in position between thefree ends of the strap 25 in the same manner as shown and described relative to Figures 3 and 6, except that wedge-shaped washers 56 are also provided. w v

By having the bumper block in any form, such as indicated by-reference characters 45, 50, and 55 at the extreme outer ends of the lay' of the loom, the

39 and 40, or 46, or 5I and 52, or the vends of the Vstrap* 25 al1 serve to guide and center the picker stick as it is moved outwardly by an incoming shuttle, and to thus properly align the picker stick ready for it to be projected through the shuttle box toward the cloth being Woven to project the shuttle to ther other end of the lay of the loom.r

In the drawings and specification, there has been setforth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specic terms are employed, they are used in a generic. and descriptive sense only, and not for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.

A check strap for looms comprising a strap folded to cause its ends to be adjacent each other, avbumper block secured between the free ends of the strap, the inner upper and lower edges of the strapr at its folded end having notches therein and a replaceable wearing member secured around the strap, and disposed'in said notches, said block having a replaceable wearing member having its ends disposed in parallel relation to the inner surfaces of the strap and conned be- Y tween the block and the strap and having its central portion covering the front surface of the block to provide a replaceable wearing surface.

A check strap for looms comprising a strapV folded to causeits ends to be adjacent each other, a bumper block secured between the free ends of the strap, the inner upper and lower edges Vof the strap at its 4folded endhaving notches therein i and a replaceable wearing member secured around the strap, and disposed in said notches, said bumper blockhaving a substantially V-shaped s notch on its inner surface adapted to receive JOHN C.
