HUG-O GOLDSMITH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE P. GOLDSMITH SONS COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FOOTBALL PANTS.
application ined January i2, 1921. serial iro. 436,633.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HUGO GoLDsMiTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Football Pants, of which the following is a full,.clear, and exact description, refer ence being had to the drawings forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to football pants equipped with thigh guards.
In pants of this character, I have found.
' it to be very valuableto prevent the thigh guard from slipping out of place, by means of a memlber secured to the pants leg, and serving to draivthe material at the front of the leg very tightly and snugly against the leg. Furthermore a very tight material v at the thigh portion of the leg in front of the wearer will make it dillicult for an opponent to get a grasp on the material of the. pants as in a game of football. It .is accordingly my object, partly in connection with football pants which have the liber thigh'guards supported directly by the material of the pants leg, to provide a means Vfor stretching theI cloth at the front of the leg very tightly against the wearer. It is also my object to make such' a stretching device from elastic material, which is at the same time adjustable, and as one of my advantages to provide*I for the use of an allrubber elastic piece as distinguished from elastic tape of ordinary character.
' These objects I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.
40 In the drawings,
Figure l isa front elevation of a pair of football pants, showing the front of one of the legs broken away.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the said pants.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3,3, of Figure 1. i
Figure 4c is a detail elevation showing the elastic device of my invention. Figure 5 is a front view of the pants in use.
VVhile'the exact form of thigh guard is not essential to my invention, I prefer to use that form of guard in my Patent No. 1,264,916, dated May 7, 1918. Thus, in the pants leg l, I mount by means of laces 2, and eyelets 3, a thigh guard 4. This thigh guard consists of concave fiber strips 5 stitched into Aa. pad with a. felt inner lining (i and a cloth outer lining 7.
The pad is thus suspended adj ustably by the laces 2 thereon being tied through the eyelets 3 on the pants, there being no other point of attachment on the said thigh guard, and the thigh guard being located in front of the leg, as is usual in this style of construction.' l
While the device of my invention to be described below' is of advantage where used with harness such as I show in my patent above referred to, it is of particular value in the construction' above described. The construction which I have now described is shown in my Patent No. 1,225,799, dated May 15, 1917.
As has been stat-ed, the object of my inven tion is to draw the cloth at the front ofthe pants leg tightly over the thigh guard thereby holding the thigh guard firmly in place against dislodgemernt, due to the roughness of play, and presenting a taut surfa.ce,'there by eluding the grasp of the opponent. I show and describe but one embodiment illustrative of my invention.
To the seam atthe. inside of the leg, I saw a loop 8 of stout tape, or such material as may be desired, preferably non-elastic. r.l`o this -loop'ofI tape, I hitch a stout all-rubber band 9. Across the back of the pants leg, at this point I mount a wide strip 10 of tape, so as to `forno a casing through which the. rubbber band is led.
l In the opposite seam of the pants, I mount a pair of eyelets 1,1, and pass a. cord 12 through the eyelets and through the rubber band. By tying the cord, or such other lacing as l isl used, tightly or loosely, the tens-ion of` the rub-ber band may be increased or decreased.
The above structure, therefore, 'provides an elastic and adjustable means for pulling the pants leg very tightly at the front, with the. attendant advantages above noted.
Other means of accomplishing my object will be apparent to those skilled in they art, without the exercise of inventive skill.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In foot ball pants or the like. a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg, a trouser leg over said thigh. guard, andelastic means secured across the back of said leg and adapted to draw the cloth of the trouser tightly against the said thigh guard, for the purpose described.l
2. In foot ball pants or the like. a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg. a trouser leg over said thigh guard, said guard being mounted on the said trouser leg, and elastic ineans'secured across the back of said trouser leg, and adapted to draw the cloth thereof, and the thigh guard, tightly against the leg for the purpose described.
3. In a foot ball pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg. a trouser leg over said thigh guard, and adjustable means secured across the back of said leg, and comprising at least in part. an elastic. portion, said means being adapted to draw' the cloth of the trouser leg tightly against the said thigh guard.
4. In a foot ball pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg. a trouser leg withinwhich said thigh guard is adjustably suspended at its upper end, and an elastic band secured across thc back of the trouser leg,1 to draw the cloth ot' the trouser leg tightly against the said thigh guard.
'5. In a t'oot ball pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg, a trouser leg within which said thigh guard is located,'and an elastic band secured to the seams of the trouser leg, and extending across the back thereof, and adapted to draw the cloth of the trouser leg tightly against the thigh guard.
6. In a foot. ball pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front of .the leg, a trouser leg within which said thigh guard is located, a casing'formed across the back of the leg and an adjustable tightener secured to the trouser and extending across through said casing, whereby the cloth at the front ofthe trouser leg may be tightly drawn over the wearer.
7. In a foot ball pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg, a trouser leg within which said thigh guard is located, a casing formed across the back of the leg and an adjustable tightener extending across through said casing and adjustably held to the trouser leg, whereby the cloth at the front of the trouser leg may be tightly drawn over the wearer, said tightener comprising an elastic band, and tapes secured in the seams ot' the trouser leg, and engaging said band for the purpose described. 4
8. In afootball pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front otl the leg, a trouser leg within which said thigh guard is located, a casing formed across the back of the leg and an adjustable tightcner extending across through said casing and adjustably held to lthe trouser leg. whereby the cloth at the front of the trouser leg may be tightly drawn over the wearer. said tightener comprising an elastic band, and tapes secured in the seams of the trouser leg, and engaging said band, for the purpose described, one of said tapes being adjustably secured in its trouser leg seam.
9.' In a football pants or the like, a thigh guard positioned at the front of the leg, aA
trouser leg within which said thigh guard is located, a casing termed across the back of the leg and an adpistable-tightener extending across through said casing and adjustably held to the trouser leg, whereby the cloth at thefront of the trouser leg may be tightly drawn over the wearer. said tightener comprising an elastic band, means for securing said band to the one seam of the trouser leg, eyelets in the other seam of the trouser leg and lacing or the like, to secure the band adJustably to said eyelets, as and for the purpose described.
