#QW/Mb www Usare THOMAS MEIKLE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,920, dated November 30, 1880.
Application led October 4, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS MEIKLE, of Louisville, in the county of J eii'erson and State ot' Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in plows, and it consists in so constructing the parts that an adjustable shin may be at- .tached to the mold-board so as to beheld firmly in place by a single bolt, and at the same time form part of the landside of the plow.
In the annexed drawings, making a part oi' this specication, Figure l is a side elevation. F g. 2 is a perspective view, showing the plow n ith the shin detached. Fig'. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. 4 is a sectional bottom view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view ofthe detachable shin-piece.
rIhe same letters are employed in all the iigures in the indication of identical parts.
Ais the mold-board. B is the share. Ois the standard. D is the detachable shin7 and E is the landside.
The mold board A is eut away along its front edge to receive the upper flange of the shin-piece D.
The landside E is cut away in front into the form shown in Figs. l and 2, the inner edge being beveled to form the recess shown in Fig. 2, which receives a projection or tongue formed on the lower edge ofthe shin-piece, as shown at Dl in Fig. 5. This projection ts closely between the beveled edges ot' the landside and mold-board, while the downwardlyprojecting flange D2is received into the recess formed at E between the rear end ofthe share and the front end of the landside, in which it is contined by the bolt l)3 passing through the ilange into the standard and frog.
The vertical exposed face ot' the piece D is Hush with the landside, and the upper inclined face is tlush with the curve ot' the moldboard. The piece being attached by a single boltmay be easily detached whenever the edge becomes worn.
I do not claim, broadly, a detachable shinpieee or cutter, my invention being confined to the mode of constructing and attaching it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A plow combining in its construction the mold-board and landside, cut away to form a recess between their upper edges, and a shin; piece having a tongue or projection, which is received between the mold-board and landside, and a downwardly extending flange, which lies in a recess formed between the landside and share, with which it is i'lush, and confined by a single bolt, substantially as set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day ot' September, 1880.
THOMAS MEIKLE.
