Butter Worker No. 234,459. Patented Nov. 16, I880.

OSCAR S. CORNISH AND DAVID W; CURTIS, OF FORT ATKINSON, WIS.
BUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,459, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed J nne 28, 1880.
Be it known that we, OSCAR S. CoRNIsH and DAVID W. CURTIS, of Fort Atkinson, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Butter-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a butter-working machine having folding supporting-legs; and it consists in combining with three independent hinged legs two removable braces, one of which is extended between and seated in two of the legs, while the other is extended from the middle of the first brace to the third leg, in the manner hereinafter explained in detail.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the machine with the legsin position for use; Fig. 2, a similar view with the legs folded.
A represents the body of the machine, which may be constructed in the manner described in Letters Patent No. 190,707, dated April 25, 1877, or in any other suitable manner.
13, C, and D represent the three sustaininglegs, located two at one end and one at the other of the body, and each hinged at the upper end to the under side of the body, so that when not required for use they may be folded inward against the same. The hinges are located at the inner sides of the legs, which have their upper ends widened and inclined so that the legs can swing outward past a vertical position and bear firmly at the top against the under side of the body, as shown.
It will be observed that the legs 0 I) are so hinged as to swing apart in unfolding, this arrangement being necessaryin order to secure sufficient spread when the machine is standing, and to cause the to fall within the sides of the body when folded.
The leg 13, at one end of the body, is provided with a recess, a, and the legs C D, at the opposite end of the body, are provided with notches or recesses 11 in the inner corners, as shown.
A brace, E, is extended between the legs 0 D, and its ends seated in the notches therein, as shown, and a second brace, F, having one end hollowed out, as shown, is extended from (N0 model.)
the leg B to the middle of brace E, in the manner represented.
The brace F is applied by inserting its small end into the hole in leg B and then slipping its notched end laterally upon brace E.
The parts are arranged to fit tightly and firmly together, and when united and adjusted they give the machine a firm and solid support.
hen the machine is to be laid aside or transported the braces are removed and the legs folded, as shown in the drawings, the braces being laid upon the body or placed therein, as preferred.
We are aware that tables have been provided with legs framed together in pairs and hinged to the under side of the table at opposite ends thereof, the legs being held apart by a detachable brace extending from the framing at one end to that at the other.
We are likewise aware that three legs have been hitherto hinged, as herein shown and described.
Our present invention differs from the first of these in that, although the legs are braced in two directions while in use, this result is accomplished without the use of the expensive framing hitherto necessary, and which, owing to the approach of the legs in folding, could not be used with our machine; and from the second in that the braces may be removed without passing around the machine from side to side, and in much less time than under the old construction; in that the legs C D are braced in two directions, and in that they are much cheaper than those formerly used.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is-- 4 The combination of the body having the three legs hinged at their inner sides to the bottom thereof, and provided with the notches, the removable brace extended between and seated in two of the legs, and the second brace seated at one end in the third leg and at the other end against the middle of the first brace.
OSCAR S. CORNISH.
