Description

H. MEYER ETAL sIMPLE x STREET GUIDE Feb. 15, 1944.
' I Filed Jan. 29, 1942'- INVENTORS MEYER HEE'BEET- EDNA M. SP/EGEL Patented Feb. 15, 1944 TENT OFFICE 2,342,004 7 SIMPLEX STREET GUIDE Herbert Meyer and Edna M. Spiegel, New York,
N. Y., assignors to Nicholas Meyer, New York,
7 Application January 29, 1942, Serial No. 428,705
Claims. (Cl. 40-130) This invention relates to street guides. I
An object of this invention is to provide an illuminated street guide comprising a glass container shaped in the form of a flattened arrow or pointer, and having a sign plate therein, and a filament within the container disposed around the edges of the container, so that the filament is shaped like an arrow or pointerso that when the same is illuminated it will point in the direction of the arrow.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sign of the character described which is visible during the day and which can be illuminated at night.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a sign of the character described, having portions disposed in plantes at right angles to one another for use at said intersections.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a compact and durable sign of the character scribed, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevational cross-sectional view through a sign or guide embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational View of a modified construction with parts broken away, and in cross-section; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, IEI designates a street guide or sign embodying the invention. The same comprises a container or casing H in the shape of a flattened arrow opened at its rear end. Extending downwardly from the middle of the underside of the casing l is an externally screw threaded knob l2.
The casing may be made of glass or other transparent material. It may also be made of transparent or translucent material. Screwed to the nipple I2 is a metal nipple l3 fixed to the hinged cover, the same as casing ll.
upper end of any suitable tubular trafiic standard.
At the rear end of the casing H is a hinged closure member or cover It, hinged as at l! and provided with a spring catch H3 at its lower end to retain the cover closed. Within the casing is a sign plate which may be made of any suitable heat resisting material. A sign may be painted on opposite sides of the plate 20. The plate 20 may be shaped like an arrow, but with the head narrowed down to the width of the shank, so that the plate may be inserted through the open end of the casing.
Attached to the middle or top of the casing H is a second casing 22 substantially similar to casing I l, but disposed at right angles thereto. The casing 22 is likewise open at one end, and has a Within casing 22 is also a sign plate 251a, similar to sign plate 20. Casing 22 may be attached to the casing l I by bolts 23 or by fusing the two casings together. Casing II is formed with an opening 25 at the top end thereof communicating with opening 26 at the bottom of casing 22.
Within casings II and 22 is a wire or filament 30 which extends all around the edge of the sign plate 20, and passes up through the openings 25, 26 and then around the edge of the sign plate 20a. The filament preferably has the shape of the casings H and 22. Said filament is attached to wiring 3| which passes through the nipple l3. The wire or filament 30 may be similar to heat resisting wire used in broilers which will glow when energized.
The casings II and I2 are preferably mad of heat resisting glass or other material, so as not to be burnt or melted when the wire 3|] is heated.
In Fig. 3 there is shown a sign 4!) comprising a casing 4| in the shape of a double pointing arrow. The casing 4| may be hermetically sealed. Within said casing is a plate 42 with points at the oppositeends thereof. Extending downwardly from casing 4| is a nipple 43 attached to a movable nipple 44. Within the casing 4| is a filament 41 extending around the inner edge of 'zhe casing 4!. The filament is attached to wiring The air has preferably been exhausted from casing 4| and the filament may be somewhat similar to the filament of an incandescent lamp. The filament 41 is preferably somewhat spaced from the inner surface of the casing 4| and the outer edge of plate 42. The casing 4| is preferably transparent and made of heat resisting material. The sign plate 42 may have any suitable sign painted or otherwise marked on opposite surfaces thereof, and is also made of heat resisting material.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As Various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A street guide comprising a fiattened casing, a second flattened casing mounted on the first casing, and disposed at right angles thereto, said casings being made of transparent material, H
opaque sign plates within said casings, said casings having registering openings, and a conductive resistance filament adapted to glow when electricity passes through it, passing through both casings and around said sign plates, and through said registering openings.
2. A street guide comprising a flattened casing, a second flattened casing mounted on the first casing, and disposed at right angles thereto, said casings being made of transparent material, opaque sign plates within said. casings, said casings having registering openings, a conductive resistance filament adapted to glow when electricity passes through it, passing through both casings and around said sign plates, and through said registering openings, said casings each being open at one end, and a cover to close each end of casings.
A. street guide comprising a casing having the shape of a flattened arrow, a nipple extending from the middle of the underedge of said cassaid casing being open at its rear end, a cover hinged to said rear end for closing said end of said casing, a sign plate within the casing, and insertable thereinto through the rear end thereor, and a conductive resistance wire adapted to glow when electricity passes through it passing through said nipple and within said casing and around said sign plate and means to connect said wire to a source of electricity.
4. A street guide comprising a casing having the shape of a flattened arrow, a nipple extending from the middle of the underedge of said casing, said casing being open at its rear end, a cover hinged to said rear end for closing said end of said casing, a sign plate within the casing, and insertable thereinto through the rear end thereof, a wire passing through said nipple and Within said casing and around said sign plate, a second casing mounted on the middle of the top of the first casing, and disposed at right angles thereto, the first casing having an opening at the top edge thereof, and the second casing having an opening at the bottom edge thereof registering with the first opening, a sign plate in the second casing, and said filament passing through the registering openings and around the sign plate in the second casing.
5. A street guide comprising a casing having the shape of a flattened arrow, a nipple extending from the middle of the underedge of said casing, said casing being open at its rear end, a cover hinged to said rear end for closing said end of said casing, a sign plate within the casing, and insertable thereinto through the rear end thereof, a wire passing through said nipple and within said casing and around said sign plate, a second casing mounted on the middle of the top of the first casing, and disposed at right angles thereto, the first casing having an opening at the top edge thereof, and the second casing having an opening at the bottom edge thereof registering with the first opening, a sign plate in the second casing, and said filament passing through the registering openings and around the sign plate in the second casing, said second casing being open at its rear end and being provided with a hinged cover to close said rear end, and said second sign plate being insertable into the second casing through the open rear end thereof.
