This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a street sign.

The invention has for an object the construction of a street sign which is adapted to be illuminated from the interior thereof.

More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a hollow casing adapted to be attached at one end upon a street sign post and having an open opposed end, and window open- 10 ings in the front and rear walls, and translucent signs supported on the inner faces of the front and rear walls viewable through the window openings. With this arrangement it is possible to illuminate the interior of the casing for the pur- )5 pose of illuminating signs.

Still further the invention proposes the provision of a cover plate for closing the open end of the casing and simultaneously serving to hold the transparent signs in position.

As a further object it is proposed to associate resilient means with each of the sign elements by which they are partially extended when the cover is removed from position.

Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention is more particularly set forth.

In Fig. l a conventional street post Ill is illustrated upon which there is mounted a bracket II (Cl. l-132) to which the street signs I2 are attached. Each of these street signs comprise a hollow casing I2' adapted to be attached at one end upon the bracket II and having an opposed open end I3. This hollow casing is also formed at the front and rear walls with window openings I4, Illa, etc., through which translucent signs I5, Ia etc., are viewable. These signs are supported upon the inner faces of the front and rear walls.

Within the casing lamps I5 are supported, which are adapted to illuminate the translucent signs. A cover plate I'I is for the purpose of closing the open end of the hollow casing.

The hollow casing I2' has a semi-cylindrical top portion I2a, the ends of which are formed with openings I2b through which the heat generated by the lamps may escape. The signs |53, I5b etc., are supported by horizontal T-shaped tracks I9 mounted upon the casing I2 and arranged longitudinally of the window openings I4, llla etc. These tracks I3 are open at the ends so that the signs I5, I5a, etc., may be slipped from their positions. The L-shaped tracks I8 are fastened to the top portion I2a which in turn is mounted on the casing I2 (see Fig. 3). The cover I'I has a bottom tongue IIa which may engage into the bottom end of the side opening I3 (see particularly Figs. 2 and 4). At the top the cover plate Il is provided with a lock 20 by which it may be locked to the top edge of the opening I3. Springs 2l, 2Ia, etc., are mounted on the casing I2', on the inner wall thereof and are adapted to partially extend the signs I5, I5a, etc., as clearly shown in Fig. 2. When the cover II is forced into position the signs I5, I5a etc., will be forced inwards and the springs 2l, Zia, etc., will be attened out against the inner end wall of the casing. These signs I5, I5a etc. are formed of translucent glass having transparent areas for the numbers, letters etc. In Fig. 7 a modification of the invention is shown in which the casing I2" is formed with window openings 22 arranged on the bottom thereof. These window openings are covered with translucent material 23. The object of these openings is to permit some of the light from the lamps to be directed downwards to illuminate the street immediately below the signs.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
