Description

F. D. KERR MARKER POST April 21, 1931.
Filed Oct. 15, 1929 Eng-1 INVENTOR Patented Apr. 21, 1931 FRANK D. KERR, F BELLEVUE, PENNSYLVANIA MARKER POST Application filed October 15, 1929. Serial No. 399,799.
My invention relates to a marker post primarily designed for being positioned at the front of a residence, for displaying information regarding the latter. The marker post may be positioned by itself on a lawn, or may be utilized as a gate or entrance post, or serve as a newel post for porch steps and balustrades, or for any other purposes wherein it is found to be applicable.
Important objects of the invention are to provide a marker post, of the character described, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, durable and efficient in its use, ornamental and attractive in appearance, which may be illuminated to render same visible-at night, and which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, erect and maintain.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in 'view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention hereinafter disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a front elevational View of a marker post constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a Vertical cross sectional view thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawing, myimproved marker post comprises a hollow, rectangularly shaped body portion 1 providing the correspondingly shaped chamber 2. The body portion 1 is providedwith a relatively heavy bottom or base 3, which is adapted for rigidly maintaining the body portion 1 in a vertically upright position, by being set in the ground or otherwise fixedly secured in position.
The upper end of the body portion 1 is open and provided with a top cover 4, which includes a reduced inner portion 5 engaging the inner top margins of the walls of the chamber 2, for maintaining the top cover a in position on the body portion 1. The top cover a is conveniently removable and affords ready access to the chamber 2.
When the body portion 1 and cover 4 are preferably constructed from concrete material, and cast or molded into shape, it is apparent that the same may be constructed from any other suitable material. Further, the confi uration of my improved marker post may be widely varied to meet conditions found in practice without departing from the spirit of the invention.
.. Arectangularly shaped, hollow holder 6 is o permanentlyembedded in the front wall 7, of the body portion 1, adjacent to the upper endthereof. The holder'6 is provided with an open inner side, and the outer face of its outer wall 8 disposed flush with the plane of the outer face of the front wall 7. The holder 6 is constructed from transparent glass, Designation elements 9, constructed from any, suitable opaque material, are mounted in the holder 6 and positioned against the inner face of the outer wall 8, so that said designation elements 9 are clearly visible through the latter,
The designation elements 9, illustrated in the drawing, are numerical designations, and combinedly constitute some predetermined representation, namely, the street. number of a residence, or the like. It is, of course, obvious that the designations, carried by-the iolder .6, may represent letters indicating the name of the owner of the residence, or any other information that it is desired to dis play. s
A mail receptacle or box 10 is fixedly supported by the body portion front wall 7 and projects into the chamber 2 The mail box 10 is provided with a hinged door 11, which is formed with a slot- 12 for permitting the insertion of mail matter into the mail box 10. The latter is disposed below and spaced from the holder 6.
A plurality of ornamental glass blocks 13 are fixedly embedded in the body portion front wall 7. The blocks 13 are provided with faceted outer faces 14 for scintillating light passing therethrough. The glass blocks 13 e1;- tend horizontally and are arranged in longitudinally aligned pairs. One pair of blocks 13 are positioned above the holder 6, another pair of blocks 13 are positioned intermediate of the holder 6 and the mail box 10, and the other pair of blocks 13 is positioned below the mail box 10. \Vhile the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed provides for glass blocks in the front body portion wall only, it is evident the same may be carried by any or all other walls of the body portion structure.
An electric lamp 15 is mounted in the chamber 2 directly rearward of the holder (3. The lamp 5 is carried at the top of a support 16, which in turn is fixedly secured to and carried by the mail box 10. The lamp 15 is provided with a reflector 17 for diffusing the light against the inner face of the body portion front wall 7. Electric current is supplied to the lamp by suitable conductors 18, which pass from the chamber 2 through a protecting tube 10 embedded in the body portion bottom of base 3.
The faceted glass blocks 13 will scintillate, even in daylight, and particularly so in darkness when the device is illuminated by the operation of the lamp 15 and the associated reflector 17, thereby attracting attention to the display matter carried in the holder 6.
The present invention provides a very ornamentally attractive marker post, rendering all display matter, carried thereby visible at all times.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a marker post of the character described comprising a hollow body portion providing a chamber having an open end, a holder permanently secured in said body portion, a designation element mounted in said holder, a plurality of transparent members having faceted outer faces embedded in said body portion, a receptacle mounted in the front wall of the latter and extending into said chamber, and an illuminating element mounted in said chamber and supported by said receptacle for illuminating said holder and said transparent elements.
2. In combination, a marker post of the character described comprising a rectangularly-shaped body portion providing a chamber having an open end, a transparent holder
