' UNITED STATES BOOKER L. OVERTON,
OFVSHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA. AND FITZHUGH L. OVERTON, or
HOUSTON, TEXAS.
COMBINED .RECEPTACLE AND ILLUMENATED SIGN.
Application filed June 1,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a receptacle.-
One object'of the invention is to provide a receptacle of the character described specially designed to be used as a trash can.
Another object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of the character described of such construction as to be readily adapted to use on streets for the collection of trash and the like and-whose walls are particularly designed to be used for advertising purposes.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a trash can or receptacle 1 adapted to be placed at intervals on the streets of cities and having translucid walls for receiving advertising, with electric lights, or other means of illumination within said translucid walls so that the advertising matter on the Walls will be visible at night.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the receptacle. 0
Figure 2 shows a vertical sectlonal v ew showing the trash receptacle in elevation and partly broken away, said view taken on the line 22 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 shows a horizontal sectional view, and
Figure 4 shows a plan view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designates similar parts in each of the figures there is an outer casing having a skeleton frame formed of four corner posts 1, preferably in the form of angle irons which are connected at the top and bottom by the transverse angle irons 2, said casing also having a top and bottom 3 and 4 formed preferably of sheet metal. The top wall 3 has a circular opening to receive the inner or trash receptacle 5 which is closed at the bottom but open at the top. This receptacle 5 fits in between the vertical rods 6, which are secured to the bottom or floor of the outer receptacle and extend through the top 3 and have the retaining nuts 7 screwed on to the upper ends thereof.
1926. Serial No. 112,843.
upper and lower ends thereof and surround ing said rods there is a circular support 11, preferably formed of angle iron, and surrounding and supported by this support there is a circular tubing 12 which is extended, forming a tubular extension 12 which continues down inside of the outer casing and is turned under the trash receptacle 5 and out through the bottom wall 4 at its center. This tubing forms a housing for the electric light wires 14 which; are connected to any suitable source of electrical supply and the tubing 12 is equipped with ordinary globe sockets 15 into which electric light globes, as 16, may be screwed.
A hood 17 is supported by the outer casing and is provided with inclined walls 18 and the dome of this hood has the hinged shutter 19 disposed above the inner receptacle and it may be readily opened for the reception of trash and then closed.
As above indicated suitable advertisin may be painted on the panels 10, or arranged on translucid slides within said panels and when the globes 16 are illuminated at night this advertising matter will thus be made readily visible.
The entire dome portion 17 may be removed when desired and the trash receptacle 6 readily removed and emptied and replaced; in replacing the inner receptacle the rods 6 form a guide to prevent the receptacle from breaking or marring the panels 10.
If desired the outer surface of the inner receptacle 5 may be formed into a reflector to give better lighting effect.
What we claim is:
1. A device of the character described in cluding an outer casing having translucid walls adapted to contain advertising matter, rods supported by the bottom of the casing and whose upper ends project above the top thereof, said top having an opening between said rods, asupport surrounding said rods and secured thereto, a tubing supported by said support, an inner receptacle fitted through said opening whose upperend extends outwardly and rests on the upper ends of said rods and means of illumination carried by said tubing and spaced apart and disposed around said receptacle and between it and the outer casing.
2. A device of the character described including a casing having translucid side walls and a top and bottom saidtop having an opening, rods arranged around said opening and whose respective ends are anchored tosaid top and bottom, a rigid support se curedtosaidrods, a tubing surrounding and supported by said support an inner recep-, taclefittedthrough said opening and spaced from said casing, and means. of illumination carried by said support and spaced apa-rt and disposed around said receptacle.
3. A device of the character described including a casing having translucid side Walls, a receptacle within and spaced from the casing, upstanding rods around the receptacle and a support secured to the rods and disposed around said receptacle and means for illumination carried by said slipport spaced apart and disposed around said receptacle.
4. A device of the character described including a casing having translucid side walls, a receptacle Within and spaced from the casing, an annular supporting member disposed around the receptacle approximately midway between its top and bottom rods to which said supporting member is secured and means for illumination spacedapart and carried by said support.
5. A device of the character described including a casing having side walls, a removable receptacle Within the casing, vertical anchor rods fixed in the casing and spaced, from thewalls thereof and disposed around the receptacle when the latter is in place, said rods forming av guide for'thereceptacle audi -guarding the side walls: of the casing to prevent the receptacle from contacting with the casing walls while. the same is being inserted into place and a. sup ort' surrounding said receptacle and secure to said rods and provided for the purpose of supporting illuminating means. a a
Intestimony whereof we have signed our names, to this specification.
