MENU HOLDER Filed May 3, 1930 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 8, 1932 UNITED STA TEST JAMES F. HAYNES, nreensroeoyranrassnn I QI MENU gui e I Application filed May 3, QZQoHseriai 'iga f igsegff This invention relates to menu holders, an object being to provide means for holding a menu card or sheet in such manner that it may be easily read, and in addition will be rotected a ainst soilin and other dama e.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a menu holder having means for illuminating the menu so that the latter may be clearly read in the dark, the invention being especially adapted for use at curb or roadside refreshment stations.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision'of a menu. holderhaving a combined handle and menu illuminating means, where- 3 by the illuminating means may be controlled by the same hand used for holding themenu;
With the above and other objects in "View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
'- be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and a pointed out in theappendedclaim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of amenu holder constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same,
Figures 3 and 4: are enlarged sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3'3 and/1 4; of Figure 1.
Figure 51s an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
' Figure 6is a perspective view showing a slightly diiferent form of the invention, the
latter being open and a portion of the handle 2 prises a casing 10 having means for removably receiving a menu cardor sheet ll, the latter being positioned within an envelope or pocket 12, made oftransparent material. This envelope or pocket permits of the use of a relatively thin menu sheet, the envelope or ot the casing 10,'and the switch 24: is
pocl ret bo'th stiffiening'or' reinforcing the sheet and protecting thesame against damage.
The casing includes a back 13, and side 'wallslgthe' f-ront wall being formed by the r pocket-and menu. The casing alongopposite.
side edges of the front wall-is provided with "opposed g'rooves'15 to receive the pocket,
while the top oii thecasing has hingedly secured thereto" as shown at 16, a cover plate "17. Hinged to the covergplateas shown atl8 isan apron l9 which extendstransversely across the upper edge.- of' the' front ofthe holder-and is yieldingly held in position. by
inieansof a spring latch 20. I
"# The holderisprovidedwith a handlefll whichdspreferablyin the form of an ordi naryflas'hlight. The 'casing oii the'flashlight has one enclseourech within an opening pro I vided inthecas in'g 10 and within acollar-22 I 1 which surrounds this opening." The bulb '23 jio 'of the' fiashli'ght;extends into the lower part positi'on'ed rupo n the"outside 0f' the casing.- The v 'b'attery forsupplying current to the b-ulb23 oif'lcourse positioned-within the flashlight "casing. v z
the said illuminating means may be operated "bvtlie same hand which. holds. the-menu.
When the switch124is-closed, the bulb. 23 will be lit to illuminate the-i-nterior'of the casing, and'a'sthe pocket 12 is transparent, and the menu sheetxll otthin material, the menu will be properly illuminated so as to be convenientlyread. While the-light willbe :sufliwrh flashlight-providesa combined m en v and illuminating- .means' for the menu and c ient to permit theimenu tobeeasily read, the
eyes of thereader will be protected :fromithe glare ofthe light.
The-collar 22 is threaded as shown 3 :urenoffthe drawings so that the'fiashlig t {may beremovably isecuredin position,
i=": InFigures 6 and 7, the casing 25 is'pro- Evil (19d with inwardly extending flanges 26 7 zaroundlits 'front'edge, and the menuisheetfiff 5 is-covered by a suitabletr'ansparent panel28, -:While: a. [frame 294's hingedly secured to the casing as shown at 30, This fra-me carries rin i-l w ich pas hrwg pening 32p vided 11 11; theytraneparent panel 28 and through openings in the menu sheet, so that i when the frame 29 is closed the menu sheet will be securely held in position. The frame 29 is provided with a resilient latch 33 which engages a keeper 34: extending from the easing 25.
In Figure 8, the casing is provided with a reflector 35 which is inclined with respect to the front wall of the casing, the said front wall being formed by a transparent envelope 11, similar to the envelope described in connection with Figures 1 to 5 of the drawings. In this form of casing the front wall is paral lel with the rear wall 36, while the top of the casing is closed by a hinged cover 37 having a flange 38 at its forward edge. The flashlight and hadle 21 is secured Withinthe casing as shown.
In Figure 9, the front wall 89 of the casing is inclined and this wall is provided with spaced openings 40 from the upper edges of which extend downwardly inclined flanges 41. The menu sheet 42 is positioned against this front wall 39 and is covered by a transparent panel 42. Light from the flashlight 21 will strike the lower faces of the flanges 41 and be reflected through the menu sheet and transparent panel, the menu sheet being so positioned that the articles indicated thereon will be over the openings 40. The top of the casing is closed by means of a cover 17' similar to the cover used in connection with the first described form of the invention.
In Figure 10 the casing is provided with an electric bulb 43 which receives current through conductors 44: from a battery 45.
Current to the lamp is controlled by a switch 46 which is mounted upon the handle 47 of the holder. The menu sheet 48 may be removably arranged within a transparent envelope or pocket 49, and the latter removably secured within the holder. A hinged cover 50 closes the upper end of the holder while a reflector 51 is arranged within the holder around the bulb 43 so as to reflect the light through the menu sheet.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A menu holder comprising a handle, a manually controlled light located at the end thereof, a casing mounted upon the handle above the light and having a groove disposed in a plane lying at an acute angle to the axis of the handle, .a translucent sheet removably located in the groove of the casing and a cover hinged to the casing and adapted to close the said groove.
In testimony whereof-I afiix my signature. JAMES F. HAYNES.
