ATENT COMBIN ED CANE-TOP AND MATCH-SAFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,676, dated October 26, 1880,

Application filed February 12, 1880.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS HELLMAN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cane-Top and Match-Safe; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and make use of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved means of attaching an ornamental top to the ordinary cane or walking-stick, and at the same time providing, in connection therewith, a convenient receptacle for holding matches or other small articles; and it consists of certain novel features, as will be hereinafter more fully explained in detail.

Figure 1 represents the detachable top of the cane raised up in order to give access to the matclrsafe. Fig. 2 shows the top and attaching parts removed from the cane; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4: a transverse section, of the same. 7

O11 referring to the drawings, A represents the cane proper, the upper end of which is hollowed out to form the cavity a, which is designed as a receptacle for small articles, but is more especially intended for carrying matches. The detachable ornament-a1 top B has attached to the under side thereof the U- sha-ped spring 0, which, when inserted into the hollow end of the cane, has a bearing or outward pressure on the inner walls inclosing the cavity a, and serves to retain the cane-top B in proper position. At a point near the 'lower end of one of the prongs forming the spring 0, and attached thereto, is the disk D, which forms the bottom for the match-safe, and when the top B is raised up, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings,the matches are raised above the immediate end of the cane, so as to be conveniently grasped with the fingers.

It will be observed that the disk D is attached to but one of the prongs forming the spring 0. If it were connected to both of the prongs or projections, it would interfere somewhat with the outward pressure'andfree action of the spring. This presents a convenient and practical arrangement for detachably securing the ornamental top to the cane proper.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combined cane-top and match-safe of the character herein shown and described, consisting of the detachable top B, the U-shaped spring 0, and the disk 1), when constructed and arranged as set forth.

2. The combination, with the cane or walking-stick A, provided with the cavity a, of the detachable top B, the U-shaped spring 0, adapted to slide into the cavity a, and the disk D, attached to one of the prongs formed by the spring 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
