Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed June 14, 1906. Serial 110.321,?4'7.
Zo wZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD KOHN, a citi zen of the United States, residing in Manhattan borough, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar and Cigarette Holders and Ash-Receivers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an article which can be cheaply made and which can be attached or dismounted as required.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a device embodying this invention applied to a table or support. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a blank.
This combined cigar and cigarette holder and ash-receiver is provided with a spring clasping-j aw whereby the device is attached to the edge of a table or shelf.
In the drawings the letter a designates the cigar-holder, which has its sides bent upward in the form of a tray or scoop, so that when a cigar is placed thereon it will not roll off. One portion of this tray or scoop is provided with a cup or receptacle 1) to receive the ashes dropped from the cigar. This cup and the tray, as shown, is preferably stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal. The bottom of this cup is provided with lugs 0, having a ivot d, to which is attached a jaw or arm e.
etween the lugs and coiled around the pivot isa spring f. One shank engages with the under part of the cup, while the other shank presses the handle part of the arm downward. The spring tends to force the jaw portion of the arm upward to engage or clasp the under surface of a table or shelf g, thus providing a simple method of detachably attaching the cup and its tray or trough to any convenient part of the table.
This device when made or stamped from a blank or one piece of material can be cheaply made.
The holder or trough portion a, flares toward the cup, so that the wide surface enables the cigar or cigarette to be easily grasped or lifted therefrom. The edges of the trough prevent the contents rolling off laterally. As these edges diminish in height toward the cup part b, the fingers at this part have ready access to the article on the trough.
The outer edge of the ash-cup rises above the level of the trough or the bottom of the trough, so that an article on the trough cannot be pushed off, but will be stopped by butting against the edge or raised part of the cup or reservoir b.
I claim A holder and ash-receiver pressed from a single blank having a parallel-sided troughforming portion and an enlarged or widened curved portion, part of the parallel side portions being bent along inclined lines to form a trough of narrow and deep shape at its free end and flat and broad at its rear or inner end, a portion of the blank between the trough-forming and the flaring portion being left flat and bent with the curved edge portion to an inclosed cup or ash-receiver having a bottom with inclosing wall entirely about the bottom, said cup being of equal width with the rear or flat portion of the trough.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
