The general purpose of the invention is the provision of a convenient and effective means of advertising articles of merchandise, products,

packages, trade-marks, emblems and indicia of various kinds by a three-dimensional display of a graphic representation, reproduction or simulation of the article placed upon a shelf.

More specifically, the invention relates to an advertising display, in the form ofa shelf bracket, which may be so designed and constructed as to be adapted to stand in vertical position on a horizontal surface, but is preferably adapted to be attached in substantially vertical position to posts and columns, hung against walls or other verticalsurfaces, or suspended from ceilings, the bracket including a shelf upon which the representation of the article to be displayed and advertised is supported and heldin display position to provide a three-dimensional effect.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a display deviceof this general character in which the entire assemblagemay be folded flat for convenient and economical production, handling, shipping and storage, or may be unfolded and set up and held in'extended condition to furnish a three-dimensional display.

Another object .of the invention is theprovision of a foldable three-dimensional display bracket construction having parts which cooperate to maintainthe shelf at any desired angle, preferably at right angles, to the back, which is usually supported invertical position, and to support the advertising reproduction or figure upon the shelf, spaced forwardly from the back any desired distance and standing substantially erect and parallel to the plane of the back.

The invention is capable of embodiment in brackets of various sizes and shapes and the reproduction, simulation or figure of the article displayed may be the actual size of the article or a different size, either larger or smaller. The device may be'm'ad'e of cardboard, heavy paper or other suitable sheet material. The material of which the display figure is formed may be printed or otherwise decorated in any desired manner and by any suitable means to depict or simulate the article to be advertised.

In general, the display device which constitutes my invention consists of a foldable display bracket including a supporting back, a shelf and a display figure formed of suitable sheet material, either of separate parts hingedly connected together or a back and an integral shelf and figure structure hingedly secured to the back, each form of cons ruction being preferably provided with hinged parts adapted to cooperate to form a latch device for bracing, holding and locking the shelf and figure in extended or set-up position. The main essential features are a back, Which may be provided with a foot or other support to enable it to stand erect on a flat horizontal surface, but ispreferably designed to be supported in a substantially vertical position on a wall or other vertical surface; a shelf hingedly attached to the back; a display figure or object hingedly attached to the shelf; and means for bracing and holding the display figure in upright position on the shelf when the device is unfolded into extended or set-up condition. As a complemental feature, forv increased rigidity, a latch means may be used, for locking the parts in set-up position.

In. its preferred form the entire device may be made in two parts,,each in the form of a pattern or blank die-stamped or cut from a single sheet of cardboard, stiff paper or other suitable sheet material, or may be assembled from a larger number of parts glued, pasted, cemented or otherwise secured. together.

In the drawings, wherein the preferred form of the invention is illustratedin Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, and the modified form in Figs. 5, 6, '7, 8 and 9, Figure l is a front perspective view of the preferred form of device in assembled and extended condition; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the integral blank or pattern which forms the back of the device shown-in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 3a shows the devic -in folded condition; Fig. 4 is a plan view-of the integral blank or pattern from which are formed the parts of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 which are not formed by the blank illustrated in Fig. 3; Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively front and back perspective views of the modified form of device in assembled and extended condition; Fig. '1 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6; and Figs. 8 and 9 are views similar to those of Figs. 6 and 7 respectively, showing an alternative form of back structure.

In the preferred form the device comprises the parts A and B, each a preferably die-cut or stamped and fiat-finished blank or pattern, shown in fiat unfolded condition in Figs. 3 and 4, re spectively. The part A, in the assembled structure, constitutes the back of the bracket; it may be of any desired configuration and may be provided with one or more suitably-located apertures I for the reception of nails or other hanging devices. From part A a latch portion I may be out along line I I and made bendable on line I2 by scoring or creas ng, the latch being so positioned on part A as to cooperate with other elements of the bracing and locking means included in part B when the bracket parts are assembled and extended to set-up position, The latch I0 may be of various shapes and may be fashioned, in cutting, to include a finger I3 and finger opening I4.

The part B furnishes the shelf, the display figure and part of the bracing and locking means; it is preferably divided by score lines or crease lines into hinged sections 2, 3, which form the shelf, hinged section 5, which forms the figure, and hinged section 9, which forms a part of the bracing and locking means and which, in the assembled device, cooperates with latch ID of part A. To facilitate setting up the device may be provided with score or crease lines 4, 8, I5, I1, 20 and H.

The shelf sections 2, 3, are foldable upon each other on line 4; the figure or object 5 is cut out on lines 6, I, and bendable on line 8; attaching or supporting tabs I5 are bendable on lines H; the bracing, holding and locking section 9 may be formed into a shape suitable for attachment to and cooperation with part A by bending its sections 22, 23, 24, on lines I5, 20, 2|.

In setting up this preferred form of device, shelf section 2 of part B is folded down, along line 4, on self section 3 and secured thereto by glue or other adhesive or fastening means; display figure 5, free along lines 6, 1, is bent upwardly on line 8 into erect position on shelf section 3, substantially at right angles thereto. When the entire section 9 has been bent upwardly along line I5 and the tabs I6 have been bent downwardly along lines I1, part B may be attached to the back A of the bracket by gluing, pasting or otherwise securing the backs of the tabs I6 and the back of hinged section 22 to the front of the bracket back A. Complete assemblage of the shelf and figure and bracin and locking means is accomplished by gluing, pasting or otherwise fastening the back of part 24 to the back of figure 5, in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

When thus assembled, the shelf 2-3 is hinged to the back A and foldable upwardly and inwardly and the display figure 5 is hinged to the shelf 2-3 and foldable downwardly and outwardly; the shelf 23 and figure 5, maintained in extended position by the hinged straps 22, 23, may be braced and locked in extended position, to give increased rigidity to the device, by the outwardly swingable latch Ill, the finger I3 of which removably engages in a suitably positioned notch 25 of strap 23, provided for this purpose. Withdrawal of latch I9 may be facilitated by the provision of a finger opening I 4.

Braced and locked in such extended condition, the bracket constitutes a firm and stable threedimensional display device. By swinging the latch I0 back into the plane of the back A of the bracket, to withdraw finger I 3 from notch 25, the hinged structure may be collapsed and folded into fiat condition convenient for handling and shipping, with the display figure 5 lying between shelf 23 and back A.

The modified form of device illustrated in Figs. 5 to '9, inclusive, differs from the preferred form shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, mainly in that certain of the parts which, in the preferred form, are stamped or out 9 .1 together "as an integral blank or pattern, are out out separately and fastened together. As in the preferred form, the fastening may be effected by gluing, pasting or in any other suitable manner.

In the modified form of construction, the bracket is made up, as in the preferred form, of a back (which may comprise a supporting back layer and a superposed shelf back layer), a shelf and a display figure hingedly connected together. The supporting back 53 may be of any desired size and shape. The shelf comprises a bottom BI and back 52, bendable at right angles along a line 53, which may be located at any selected point on the blank, according to the width and extent of shelf desired, and dependent, also, to some extent upon the amount of overlapping of the supporting back 53 by the shelf back 52 which may be desired. The display figure is held in upright position by brace 51 and a suitable holding and locking means may be provided for locking brace 51, figure 55 and shelf 5I in extended position after the parts have been assembled into a complete device and fastened together.

The locking means preferably consists of a tongue 54 struck up either on the shelf back 52, as in Figs. 6 and 7, or on the supporting back, as in Figs. 8 and 9. The tongue 54 thus provided on the back of the bracket, is formed with an aperture 55, which, when the tongue is bent to the position shown in Figs. 6, '7, 8 and 9, receives a cooperating latch 6|, projecting from a notch in the face of brace 51, which is foldable along a line 58 to furnish an attaching part 59adapted to be secured to the back of display figure 56. Similarly, figure 58 has an attaching part 62, bendable on line 53, for attachment to shelf 5I. If desired, a supplemental shelf layer 84 may be secured to the underside of shelf 5I, as a brace or reinforcement, which, by the abutment of its edge against back 50, holds shelf 5I in substantially horizontal position and prevents it from swinging downwardly, while permitting it to swing upwardly. Thus the shelf 5|, even in the absence of a locking means such as that furnished by tongue 54 and latch BI, will be held in its horizontal extended position, with the aid of brace 51, by the brace or reinforcement afforded by shelf layer 64.

When the parts have been secured together in hinged relation, the entire device of the modified form is generally similar to the preferred form of construction, and, when extended, as illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and '7, provides a similar threedimensional display. When assembled, shelf 5I, hinged to the back on line 53, is foldable upwardly and inwardly, and figure 55, hinged to shelf 5I on line 53, is foldable downwardly and outwardly, the shelf 5| and figure 55 being maintained in extended position by brace 54 and hinged brace 51, the shoulder 55 of which abuts and wedges against the back (either the layer 52, as in Figs; 6 and '7, or the layer 50, as in Figs. 8 and 9), thus bracing and holding the parts in extended position. To give increased stability and rigidity, the brace 51 may be locked in extended position by bending ear 54 into wedging engagement with the walls of notch 60, with the latch finger 6| inserted through aperture 55.

The display figure 5, in the illustration of my preferred form of display device, represents roughly a bottle of beverage with glasses and in the modified form a jug or stein of beverage, but it is to be understood that the display figure may take any one of innumerable shapes and appearances, for the purpose of displaying a wide variety of objects and advertising various products.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a back, a shelf hingedly connected to said back, a figure hingedly connected to said shelf, and brace means hingedly connected to said back and said figure for holding said figure in substantially erect position on said shelf and spaced from said back when in extended position, said shelf, said figure and said brace means being formed integrally from a single blank.

2. A device of the character described formed of two integral blanks, one comprising a back and theother being bent along fold lines to form a shelf which is hingedly secured to said back when the parts are assembled and stands outwardly from said back when in assembled and extended position, a figure which is hingedly secured to said shelf and stands substantially erect thereon when in extended position, and a brace which is hingedly secured to said back and to said figure for spacing said figure from said back and holding said figure in substantially erect position spaced from said back when in extended position, said shelf and said figure being foldable toward said back to collapse the device to substantially fiat condition.

3. A device of the character described comprising a back, an integral blank of sheet material divided by fold lines into a shelf, a figure and a brace, said shelf being hingedly secured to said back, said figure being struck up from said shelf and bent to substantially erect position on said shelf, and said brace being bent upwardly from said shelf, secured to said back, extended from said back to said figure and secured to said figure to hold said figure in hinged relation to said. back and to said shelf when the device is in assembled condition.

4. A device of the character described comprising a back out from sheet material and a blank of sheet material divided by fold lines into a shelf portion, a figure portion and shelf-attaching portions, said shelf-attaching portions being hingedly secured to said back when the device is in assembled condition and said figure being bent to substantially erect position on said shelf port on when in extended position, and a brace portion formed of sheet material and divided by fold lines into attaching areas secured respectively to said back and to said figure portion and an intermediate brace holding said figure portion in spaced and substantially parallel relation to said back when the device is in assembled and extended condition.

5. A device of the character described comprising a back of sheet material and a blank of sheet material divided by fold lines into a shelf comprising a top shelf portion and a bottom shelf portion, a figure struck out of said top shelf portion and bendable to erect position on said shelf, a shelf-attaching portion and a brace portion, said shelf-attaching portion being hingedly secured to said back, said top shelf portion being folded over upon said bottom shelf portion, said figure being bent to erect position on said shelf and said brace portion being bent upwardly from said shelf, secured hingedly to said back and having its end portion extending from said back and hingedly secured to said figure when the device is in assembled condition.

6. A device of the character described comprising a back, a shelf hinged to said back, a display figure hinged to said shelf and. adapted to stand erect on said shelf substantially parallel to and spaced from said back, a brace between said figure and said back to hold said figure in substantially erect position when the device is in extended condition, and a latch supported on said back and engaging said brace for locking said brace and said figure in extended position.

7. A device of the character described comprising a back of sheetmaterial, a shelf hinged to said back, a figure hinged to said shelf and adapted to stand erect on said shelf substantially parallel to and spaced from said back, a brace hingedly secured to said figure, positioned between said figure and said back and adapted to abut against said back to hold said figure in substantially erect positon spaced from said back when' in extended position, and a latch struck up from said back and bent into engagement with said brace for securing said brace and said figure in extended position, said latch and said brace being releasable to permit said figure and said shelf to be folded fiat against said back.

8. A foldable display device formed of two integral blanks, one comprising a back portion having a latch struck up and bendable therefrom, and the other being bent along fold lines to form a shelf which is secured to said back portion and stands outwardly therefrom when the device is in assembled and extended condition, a figure portion which is hingedly secured to said shelf and stands substantially erect thereon when in extended position, and a brace portion which is hingedly secured to said figure portion to space said figure portion from said back when in extended position, said latch engaging said brace portion when in extended position for locking said brace portion and said figure portion in extended position.

9. A foldable display device comprising a back of sheet material and a blank of sheet material divided by fold lines into a shelf portion, a figure portion, a brace portion and a shelf-attaching portion secured to said back when the device is in 'asembled condition, said figure portion being bent to erect position in spaced parallel relation to said back on said shelf portion and said brace portion being bent upwardly from said shelf portion, secured hingedly to said back, extended from said back to said figure portion and secured hingedly to said figure portion when in assembled relation, and a hinged latch struck up from and bendable from said back and engaging said brace portion between said back and said figure portion to lock said brace portion and said figure portion when in extended position.

10. A foldable display device comprising a back. a shelf hinged to said back, and a display figure hinged to said shelf and foldable downwardly upon said shelf, said shelf and said folded figure being foldable upwardly against said back when the device is collapsed, and a hinged brace engaging said figure and said back and holding said figure in erect position on said shelf when the device is extended.

11. A device of the character described comprising a back formed of layers of sheet material, a shelf bendable from said back substantially at right angles to said back when in extended condition, a figure formed of sheet material hingedly secured to said shelf and adapted, when in extended position, to stand. substantially erect upon said shelf, a brace hingedly secured to said figure and abutting said back when in extended position, and a latch bendable from said back into engagement with said brace for locking said brace and said figure in extended position.

12. A device of the character described comprising a back formed of layers of sheet material, one of said layers being bent to form a shelf hingedly supported substantially at right angles to said back when the device is in extended condition, a figure hingedly secured to said shelf and adapted, when in extended position, to stand substantially erect upon said shelf, a brace hingedly secured to said figure and adapted to abut said back to hold said figure and said shelf in extended position, and a latch struck up from said back and engaging said brace to lock said figure and said shelf in extended position.

13. A device of the character described comprising a back of sheet material and a blank of sheet material divided by fold lines into' shelf layers foldable upon one another, a figure portion struck up from one of said shelf layers, a brace portion and a shelf-attaching portion, said shelfattaching portion being hingedly secured to said back and said brace portion being hingedly secured to said back and to said figure portion to hold said figure portion erect on said shelf in spaced and substantially parallel relation to said back when the device is in extended condition.

14. A foldable display device comprising a back, a shelf formed of upper and lower layers, a figure hingedly connected to said shelf, and a brace, said upper shelf layer being hingedly secured to said back and said lower shelf layer, when the device is in extended condition with said shelf projecting outwardly from said back, abutting said back and bracing said shelf in its extended position, said brace being hingedly connected to said figure and said back and holding said figure in substantially erect position on said shelf when in extended condition, said figure being folded fiat against said shelf and said shelf with said figure folded thereon being folded fiat against said back when the device is collapsed.
