Description

Nov. 9, 1943. c. o. HAHNEMANN PAPER CARTON Filed April 3, 1942 v INVENTOR. ('baaflfiabnemann BY I Mi: m2;
ATTORNEY/9' Patented Nov. 9, 1943 U NI r1: .;sTATE PATENT .0 PRICE PAPER. CARTON Charles D. Hahnemann, San Francisco, Calif. Application April 3, 1942, Serial No. 437,572
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to an improvement in paper cartons, and in particular the invention is directed to and it is my principal objectto provide, in a paper carton or box of relatively small size and of the type initially used for foodstufis such as cereals or the like, a novel arrangement which by a simple operation, makes the box useful as a tableware rack or holder adapted for use in the home, in camps, or on picnics.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a paper box of convenient size and initially used for foodstuffs, with a plurality of symmetrically disposed rows of scored portions or pushouts on one side or face of the box, and which face is adapted to be disposed uppermost, whereby when these scored portions are pushed out of position in an inward direction, apertures are formed to receive pieces of tableware therethrough in supporting relation; the box below said side being of sufficient depth to receive a major portion of the length of said supported pieces.
A further object of the invention is to so score the box for each push-out that when the portions adjacent the scores are pushed out of position inwardly, they form downwardly converging tongues below the resulting aperture, such tongues being adapted to frictionally engage the tableware in stabilizing relation.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in 'the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper carton mally used for boxing foodstuffs, etc., for retail sale; this paper carton including opposed sides, one of which is indicated at 2.
This side of the box is initially formed with a number of rows of scored portions indicated at 3; these scored portions being generally oval in configuration and of a size such that when pushed inwardly and out of position relative to the box side 2 the resulting aperture 4 is of sufficient size to permit the entry of a piece of tableware 5.
The scored portions as initially made do not perforate the side of the carton, i. e., the depth of said scores is limited to such extent that said side of the carton is initially unbroken along the score lines.
It should be noted that along one side, the pushouts are unscored, as indicated at 6, whereby when the push-out pieces or tongues l are pressed inwardly, they remain hinged to the side 2 and extend at a downward slope, so as to frictionally engage the silverware below the side 2 in stabilizing relation.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I show a modified type of the push-out, which is formed as follows:
Each push-out comprises elongated tongue portions 8 produced by symmetrical end scoring 9 of the carton side 2a, preferably curved as shown, and a central longitudinal score II] which connects the end scoring 9. It will thus be seen that when the tongues 8 are pushed out of initial position in said wall and in an inward direction, they converge downwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 below the aperture I I. Thus, when a piece of tableware 5 is inserted through said aperture II in supported relation, the tongues 8 engage the same on opposite sides in stabilizing relation.
It is understood, of course, that the push-out arrangement above described will only be used after the foodstuffs initially contained in the box have been removed. These will be removed from one end of the box, and such end of the box may then be resealed in any suitable manner.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
As an article of manufacture, a paper carton ception of tableware; each push-out comprising a pair of adjacent push-out tongues scored symmetrically at the ends and along a central common line between said ends, side edge portions between adjacent ends of said end scores remaining unscored so that when said pair of tongues are pushed inwardly relative to said one wall, said tongues separate and are bent inwardly in converging relation below the resultingv aperture to 1 frictionally engage and stabilize said tableware.
