March 28, 1961 B. B. NEVAI RETAINING SLEEVE FOR HANGER SETS Filed July 16, 1959 ELEM/E m I, II I, 7 l, n, m n I Q m J W my e WM m m 4 E M Y B United States Patent 1 RETAINING SLEEVE FOR HANGER SETS Bela B. Nevai, 169 Wykagyl Terrace, New Rochelle, NY.
Filed July 16, 1959, Ser. No. 827,576 9 3 Claims. (Cl. 206-65) This invention relates to trouser and skirt hangers and more particularly to a retaining sleeve for packaging said hangers and a fiat rectangular member from which the sleeve is formed.
Trouser hangers, as well as other hangers, are presently merchandised in sets of two or more, which are suitably held together as a merchandisable unit by means of a paper sleeve which is wrapped around the body portions of the hangers and secured in sleeve form as by means of a staple or other fastening means. Such sleeves have been found to have disadvantages; for example, they are not adaptable to hangers of different sizes and shapes so that a special sleeve has to be produced for each such size and shape. In addition, the sleeves are not made in such manner that the trademark of the manufacturer or distributor, which is normally stamped on the side surface of the hanger body portion, is visible. Known types of sleeves do not provide adequate holding force to maintain the hangers from separating or becoming disassembled.
An object of the present invention is to overcome the disadvantages of known sleeves and to provide an improved sleeve having advantages peculiar to itself.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cutout and scored rectangular member in the nature of a blank which can be readily fitted around hanger sets of difierent sizes and shapes and secured in position in such manner as to tend to keep the hangers together as a merchandisable unit.
A further object of the invention is to construct the blank and the sleeve formed therefrom in a manner which will enable the trademark on the hanger body portion to be visible at all times.
Other and further objects and advantages will be understood and appreciated by those skilled in this art or will be apparent or pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hanger set to which the new sleeve has been applied;
Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the flat rectangular member from which the sleeve is formed;
Fig. 4 is a view showing the member of Fig. 3 bent or folded into nearly complete form ready for reception of the hangers indicated in phantom therebelow; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional transverse view showing the completed and secured sleeve.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral designates the flat rectangular member after it has been die cut or otherwise formed from suitable paper, cardboard or cellulosic stock. At each end of member 10 there is an end panel 11 which, together, ultimately form the bottom of the sleeve. Next to the end panels 11 are the intermediate panels 12 and centrally of member 10 there are uniting portions 13 extending between the inner edges of the intermediate panels 12. These uniting portions represent .the residual parts of a panel which has been cut out at 14 in such manner as to form semi-circular flaps 15, which are unitarily connected at their bases to the adjacent edges of panels 12. The uniting portions 13 each terminate in a marginal strip portion 16, there being score lines 17 at the juncture of the strip 16 and the uniting portions 13. At 18 there is a slit at each end of each strip, so that the strips may move from horizontal toward a vertical position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
There are also score lines 19 between panels 11 and 12 and score lines 20 between panels 12 and uniting portions 13, as will be particularly observed from Fig.
3. The intermediate panels 12 are each provided with a window 21 which may be of any suitable dimensions, depending upon the size and arrangement of the trade mark shown at 22 (see Fig. 1) in order that the trademark of the manufacturer of distributor will be clearly visible at all times after the sleeve is applied to the hanger set.
It will be appreciated that the uniting portions 13 constitute the top of the applied sleeve, that the intermediate windowed panels 12 constitute the sides of the sleeve and that the end panels 11 constitute the bottom of the sleeve when they are bent at score lines 19 and secured in position, as by a staple 23 (Fig. 5). It will also be understood that any suitable printing, advertising or directions for use may be imprinted upon the available surfaces of the sleeve, including the semi-circular flaps 15 and further that the blank and hence the sleeve is adaptable for the reception of hanger sets of different sizes, shapes and numbers and while the hanger set illustrated contains three trousers hangers, it is to be understood that this is purely for exemplary purposes and that the invention is not limited thereto or to the particular shape of hanger hook appearing on the drawing.
The marginal strips 16 move from a horizontal toward a vertical position when the sleeve is applied to a hanger set and the particular angular position of these marginal strips will depend upon the shape and size of the hanger hook and exert a small but useful force or pressure on the hooks which, in conjunction with the flaps 15, exert what .is termed four-point tension; that is to say, the strips 16 and flaps 15 act to centralize the hooks with respect to the cut-out 14 through which they extend. The windows 21 permit display of the trademark usually printed on or burned into the wood body portion 24 and the hanger and the hooks 25 are made in any suitable or known manner, so that the two-part body portion 24 can be opened for the reception of a skirt or pair of trousers and then the body portion members clamped together.
In applying the member 10, it is preferably first folded into the form shown in Fig. 4 whereupon the hanger hooks are passed upwardly through cut-out 14 until the uniting portions 13 are in contact with the upper edges of the hanger body portions 24 and then assembly is completed by bending end panels 11 about score lines 19 until the end panels are in horizontal overlapping position, as shown in Fig. 5, whereupon a staple is applied in known manner or adhesive can be employed or any other suitable manner for securing the end panels in their overlapped relationship to hold the hanger body portions in snug assembly to form a merchandisable set of hangers with the advantages above set forth.
What is claimed is:
1. A flat rectangular member adapted to be formed into a retaining sleeve for hanger sets and comprising an imperforate panel at each end, an intermediate panel inward of each end panel connected to the adjacent end 3 panel by a score line and having an elongated window disposed substantially centrally thereof through which surfaces of the hangers are visible and a central panel between the windowed panels, said central panel being connected, by score-line s ,to adjacent portions of: the intermediate panels and having a cut-out portionand a pair of semicircular, opposing flaps in thecut-out portion attached at their bases to the inner edges of the windowed panels and said central panel having uniting pontions terminating in marginally scored strips bounding the sides of the cut-out portion closely adjacent to said flaps.
2. A retaining sleeve for hanger sets comp-rising imperforate end panels constituting a bottom, Windowed panels constituting sides and having elongated apertures through which the hangers are visible and uniting portions constituting the top of the sleeve, upright semicircular flaps rising from the Windowed panels between the uniting portions and a cut-out portion between the flaps and the uniting portions to provide passage for 20 hanger hooks through the top of the sleeve.
3. A retaining sleeve for hanger sets comprising imperforate end panels constituting a bottom, windowed panels constituting sides and having elongated apertures through which the hangers are visible and uniting portions constituting the top of the sleeve, upright semicircular flaps rising from the windowed panels between the uniting portions and a cut-out portion between the lapping relationship on, the underside of the hanger body portions.
