The invention relates to handles for mattresses. y
One object of the invention isto provide a handle forY a mattress which comprisesa'woven.
or braided flat strip forming a: grip which, when notinv use, willi-lt closely against the outer face of the box-border of the mattress, which can be secured to the box-border by simple securing means,` and which is durable.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the detailed description.
The invention consists in the several novel features which are hereinafter set forth and are more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. v
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective of a portion of a mattress embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the boxborder and the devices for securing the ends of the handle-strip thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the eyelets. Fig. 4 is a perspective of one of the plates which are adapted t0 be clamped against the inner face of the box-border. Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the clips for securing the end of the handle-strip against Withdrawal through the eyelets Fig. 6 is a perspective of a portion of the handle-strip. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section through one of thel eyelets illustrating the manner of assembling the eyelet and plate with the box-border.
The invention is exemplified in a mattress a which may be of any suitable construction and is provided With the usual box-border b. A tapelike stout Woven or braided strip I0 forms a grip which is adapted to lie atwise against the outer face of the box-border. Said strip has its ends extended through a pair of eyelets to the inner side of the border and secured therein so as to prevent the withdrawal of the ends from the eyelets when the handle is used in lifting the mattress. Each eyelet comprises a transverse flange II with vertically straight sides I2 connected by rounded upper and lower ends I3 which form a vertically elongated opening I4-which conforms substantially to the cross-sectional contour of the strip I 0 so that the strip will be held against curling or folding by the flanges around the openings when subjected to tension or While being gripped by a hand. Each eyelet also comprises an out-turned flange I6 conforming in contour to the opening I4 and fitting against the outer face of the box-border. A plate I'I has a vertically elongated opening I8 which nts snugly around the transverse flange I2 and is adapted to engage the inner face of the box-border. Each eyelet is also providedwith an out-turned ange I9 which overlaps the inner face of "plate AI'I and is pressed against said plate so that the boxborder will be tightly clamped between'the plate and the front flange I6 of the eyelet. In assembling the eyelets and the box-border thelplates yI1 `are slipped onto the transverse flanges II before the flanges I9 are formed thereon, as illustrated in Fig. '7. fThe inner'ends of the transverseY flange are next bent outwardly and pressed against plate Il. Flange IS is subjected to pressure to cause the border to be securely clamped between flanges I6 and plates I1. The plates I1, which are subjected to the load in lifting, are preferably of greater area. than the flanges I6 to distribute the pressure of plates Il over a greater area of the inner face of the border. After the eyelets have been secured in the box-border the ends of strip I0 are passed through the eyelets. The inner terminals of the strip are reverted or doubled over, as at 20, to provide an enlargement on the inner ends of strip I0. Clasps 2| formed of at metal and provided with teeth 22 along their vertical edges, are then folded around theY reverted ends 20 and the teeth 22 are pressed together so they will penetrate the strip and be rigidly secured thereto. When the clasps are secured on the strip II) the reveited ends and clasps will prevent the inner ends of strip I IJ from being withdrawn through the eyelets. The clasp 22 also functions to prevent any warping or curling of the fabric so that it will remain flat at all times. `The eyelets with the elongated openings also serve to keep the strip I0 flat when under load.
The invention exemplifies a device in which a relativelywide flexible stout flat stripforms a grip by which the mattress can be readily handled and which has its ends secured in the boxborder so it will remain flat during useand which has its inner ends securely held againstv withdrawal from the eyelets.
'I'he invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. 'I'he combination, with the box-border of a mattress of a pair of eyelets, each eyelet comprising a transverse flange extending through an opening in the border and having vertically elongated straight sides and rounded upper and lower ends forming a vertically elongated straightacross the outside of the border, forming a grip,'
extended through and conforming in cross-section to the contour of the elongated openings inl i the eyelets and having ends on the inner side oi the eyelets and box-border `formed into rolls which form enlargements, and clips of flat metal cylindrically folded and permanently clenched` around the rolls, respectively, the clips and rolls forming means for preventing withdrawal of the ends of the strip from' the eyelets, the flexible strip having terminals extended to lie `between one side of the clips and the inner'face of the eyelets. f 2. The combination with the box-border of` a mattress of a pair of eyelets, each eyelet com# prising a transverse iiange extending through anopening in the border and having vertically elongated straight sides and upper and lower ends forming a vertically elongated straight-sided opening through the border and an out-turned flange tting against the outer face of the border, plates fitting around the outside of the transverse flange, each plate having an opening conforming to one of the transverse anges and fitting against the inner face of the border, an outturned integral -flange on the inner end of each transverse flange fitting against the inner face `of, one of the plates and clamping the border between one of the outside flanges and one of the plates, a strip of flat flexible fabric extending across the outside of the border, forming a grip, and extended through and conforming in cross-section to the contour of the elongated openings in the eyelets, and having ends on the inner side of the eyelets and the box-border formed into rolls Which form enlargements, and clips of fiat metal cylindrically folded around the rolls and having teeth permanenthr clenched into the strip, the clips and rolls forming means for `preventing withdrawal of the ends of the flexible strip `from the eyelets, the flexible strip having terminals extended to lie between one side of theclips and the inner face of the eyelets.
