My invention relates to a new and useful insignia handkerchief and arm band. and has for one of its objects to provide a handkerchief with insignia in the center thereof, said handkerchief adapted to be folded on spaced imaginary lines parallel to another imaginary line passing through two opposite corners to constitute a band that is to be placed about a person's arm or sleeve in a manner to display the insignia. The insignia may be that of any organization but is particularly adapted for use by members of the Civilian Defense Corps to designate the rank of or position held by the wearer.

Another object of this invention is to provide an article to take the place of the usual arm band that will more likely be carried by the owner and therefore constantly be ready for use and during other periods may be utilized as an ornamental pocket scarf.

A further object of the present invention is to fashion the handkerchief to provide means of attachment thereof, when folded, to hold the same on the arm or sleeve without the use of separate or independent fastening devices.

With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of certain details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, in which:

Fig. 4 is a view, on a reduced scale, of the arm band on a sleeve, the actual locations of some features being purposely slightly misplaced to show them in one illustration.

In carrying out the invention as herein embodied 5 represents a handkerchief produced from a rectangular piece of suitable fabric in the center of which is depicted insignia 6 of some organization representing a particular officer, office or the like. The insignia is sewed, stamped, embroided or otherwise placed on the handkerchief. The insignia shown herein are that of an Air Raid Warden of the Civilian Corps and the drawing is lined for color.

With the handkerchief considered as viewed in Fig. 1 one of the diagonals is in a horizontal position and in one of the corners on this diagonal is formed an eyelet I to receive the other corner of the handkerchief as will be presently related. The insignia are positioned perpendicularly relative to the horizontally located diagonal so that by folding the corners of the handkerchief which are in the vertical diagonal parallelwith the horizontal diagonal the insignia on the resulting arm band will be in an upright position.

In actual use the upper portion of the handkerchief is folded over and over on its reverse face on suitable fold lines, for example the fold lines 8, 9 and I0, and similarly the lower portion of the handkerchief is folded over and over on its reverse face on the suggested or other desirable fold lines II, I! and I3 until the major portions of the vertical corner areas are back of the relatively narrow horizontal diagonal area 14 thus producing an arm band 14.

When the device is not in use for the special purpose for which it is intended, it may be placed in a pocket as an ordinary handkerchief or it may be put in a breast pocket with portions protruding after the manner of an ornamental scarf. In either case very little space is occupied and a person does not mind carrying the same for emergency purposes. When necessity requires the use of the arm band, the handkerchief is folded as previously described and the arm band thus formed is passed around the arm, or coat or dress sleeve, and the imperforate corner l 5, opposite the eyelet I, is threaded through said eyelet and finally tucked under the band, as at IS in Fig. 4.

The present arm band is not generally carried by members of the Civilian Defense Corps because it is bulky and requires a second person to pin it in place so that if away from home at the time of a blackout warning such members do not have anything to visibly show their authority.

My article being small and occupying a relatively smally space in a persons wearing apparel is more likely to be carried at all times and can be folded into an arm band whenever necessary and put in place by the owner with very little efl'ort.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details construction and method of folding herein shown and described as these may be varied within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and useful is:

In a device of the kind described, a handkerchief, insignia on said handkerchief in the center thereof and perpendicular to one of the diagonals of said handkerchief, portions of said handkerchief at both sides of the horizontal diagonal being foldable under the center area to produce an arm band on which theinsignia are displayed, and an eyelet in one corner in the horizontal diagonal to receive the opposite corner prior to being tucked under the band.
