Abstract

The dual purpose garment incorporating a visual safety display, enables the wearer to bring into use, areas of bright coloured luminous material, both at the wearers front and rear, so that the wearer can be easily seen, during periods of poor visibility. A flap 2 with a covered luminous material on its inner surface overlaps a second such panel on the garment. When a shoulder fastener 8 is released the flap can be passed to the weare'rs back from his front such that both panels are visible. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A dual purpose garment incorporating a visual safety display Made as a separate entity, and it can be produced with the machinery, and expertise already extant in clothing factories, the visual safety display, can be produced in the form of a kit, so that it may be sewn into an existing garment, and it has the attribute of being always available when required, because being a part of the normally worn garment, it cannot be left somewhare, and only missed when required.
The dual purpose garment (1), incorporating a visual safety display, here described, and displayed on sheet one only, figs (1 to 6) shows the visual safety display, consisting of a flap (2), which is composed of the same material as the body of the garment (1), sewn to one side of the flap (2), is a panel of bright coloured luminous material, panel (3), which when flap (2), is in its stowed position, atthe rear of the garment (1), is concealed on the inside of the flap (2), where it covers face to face, another panel of bright coloured luminous material, panel (4), which is sewn to the body of the garment (1), panel (3) except for a small margin, can be made to cover, the whole of the one surface of the flap (2), and panel (4), the whole of the area, on the body of the garment (1), covered by the flap (2), or both panels (3) and (4), may be displayed in patterns, or letters, to give greater impact when exposed to view, the top rig ht corner of flap (2), is attached to the top centre of the right shoulder, of the garment (1), by a hinge (5), which is composed of material, the same, or with the same appearance, as the garment (1), the hinge (5) must be supple, to avoid any stress where it is sewn into the garment (1), and yet broad enough to avoid twisting, the top left corner of the flap (2), is attached to the top centre of the left shoulder of the garment (1), by a tag (6) which is of the same consistency as the hinge (5), the tag (6) has a button hole (7) in its free end, by which the flap (2) is fastened, in both its operative and inoperative positions, by a button (8), which is put at the top centre of the left shoulder of the garment (1), this arrangement enables the wearer, to bring the visual safety display into use, without taking the garment (1) off, by unbuttoning the flap (2), and bringing it over to the front, over the right shoulder, the length of the hinge (5), and the tag (6), are long enough to stop the top edge of the flap (2) from crowding the neck of the wearer, it can also be shaped as an aid to neatness, the bottom edge of the flap (2), is attached to the garment (1 ) at the waistline, via two tags (6) which are identical with the tag (6) already described, and are fitted one at each side, of the bottom edge of the flap (2), they are buttoned on to the garment (1), by buttons (8) one at each side, and at the centre sides near the waistline of the garment (1), the length of the tags (6), together with the position of their buttonholes (7), and the site of the buttons (8), facilitates the anchoring of flap (2), in both its operative and inoperative position, if the flap (2) is long, two more tags (6), and buttons (8), can be fitted, at half the vertical, one at each side of the flap (2), so that it will adhere neatly to the contours of the figure, with garments made of heavy materials, the buttonholes (7) may to advantage be replaced by press studs (9), which would be of the double sided type, so that they would press on to their bases (10), from both sides, the bases (10) being situated in the places of the buttons (8), on the garment (1). The visual safety display is shown in its operative position, in Figs. 1 to 4, and in its inoperative position, in Figs. 5 and 6 where the position of the hinge (5), and the tags (6) only ars shown.
1. A dual purpose garment, made of cloth, leather, or like plastic materials, to fit people of all ages, which has the appearance of a normal garment, when worn during periods awl good visability, but which has concealed under a flap, panels of bright coloured luminous material, so that by altering the position of the flap, the panels of bright coloured luminous material are exposed to view, both at the front and rear of the wearer, making the wearer easily seen when abroad, during periods when visability is bad.
2. A dual purpose garment, as claimed in claim 1, which due to the novelty factor, will encourage children to possess and wear it.
3. A dual purpose garment, as claimed in claim 1, which can be obtained cheaply, because being a part of one garment, it will not cost as much as it would, if the visual safety display, was made as a separate entity.
4. A dual purpose garment, as claimed in claim 1, where the visual safety display, can be produced in the form of a kit, so that it may be sewn into an existing garment, the kit would consist of:- a flap, several of which, would be made of different materials in current use, in large and small sizes, with their appendages, and two panels of bright coloured luminous material, of appropriate size.
5. A dual purpose garment, as claimed in claim 1, which does not require any outlay, by manufacturers, to make it, because it can be produced with the machinery and expertise, already extant in clothing factories.
6. A dual purpose garment, as claimed in claim 1, where the visual safety display, is always available, because being a part of the normally worn garment, it cannot be left somewhere, and only missed when required.
