SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,953, dated September '7, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. J. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have in ventcda new and useful Improvement in Detachable Shoes for Horses, 850, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accom pan ying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shoe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a portion in line 00a, Fig 2. Fig. 4 is a rear view.

My im ent n consists of a skeleton-shoe, constructed as hereinafter set forth, adapted to be applied to the hoof when a shoe is lost or loose or the hoof undergoing treatment.

The toe part has hinged to it two bars adapted to clamp the tear or heel part of the hoof.

'The shoe is held in position by straps, the lower one of which is prevented from being worked down under the shoe by means of a loop suspended from the upper strap.

Referring to the dra\vings,A represents the toe-plate, consisting of a piece of metal having at its front end one or more clips, c a, on its under side a shoulder, A, and pivoted to it two rearward'projecting bars, B, of metal, hzwing, if desired, a common axis, a, and diverging therefrom, the rear end of each bar having a clip, 1), adapted to embrace the side of the hoof at the heel thereof.

0 I) represent the fastening-straps, which are passed through a looped strap, 0, secured to the plate A, and looped straps O", secured to the clips b, the lowerstrap, 0, extending around the hoof and the upper strap extending around the fetlock, both straps being properly buckled after they have been applied and tightened in position.

When the shoe is to placed on the hoof the 5 clips at arecadjusted on the toe portion thereof, and the bars B are moved on their axis a, in order to bring the clips 1) against the sides of the heel portion of the hoof. The straps O D are then tightened and fastened, and thus, by 0 means of said straps G D, the straps G O, and the clips at b, the shoe will be found to be securely held on the hoof, the subsequent removal thereof when required being readily accomplished.

The shoe is, furthermore, of a somewhat skeleton form, and thus light and inexpensive.

The opening or separating motions of the bars B are limited by the shoulders A, which in the present case are formed by a piece of metal, A, of less depth than the plate A, riveted to the underside thereof, the two plates also constituting convenient means of attaching the looped strap 0 by clamping between them the lower end of said strap.

In order to prevent any lowering motion of the rear of the strap 0 and treading thereon,

I employ a loop, E, which is suspended from the upper strap, D, and passed around said lower strap, 0, thus sustaining the latter at all times.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The detachable skeleton-shoe consisting of the toe-plate A and bars B, hinged thereto, and suitable fastening-straps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The plate A, provided with the clips 0, and hinged bars B, provided with the clips b, in combination with the looped straps G O and fastening-straps O D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
