To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST W. KUMLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in IvVheatland township, county of Vernon, and State of 'Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful improvement in the shape of a buckle or means of fastening on canvas aprons, butters, elevators, etc., on self-binding harvesters and other machinery, such as will make the fastening of the two ends of such aprons more secure and durable.
This invention relates to improvements on self-binders or harvesters particularly, and has for its object to simplify and make more durable and lasting the fastening of canvas aprons, butters and elevators.
The chief object in view is the elimination of the present leather straps and buckles and substituting therefor a single metal buckle, extending the entire width of said canvas apron or butter or grain elevator, and fastened thereto by means of sheet steel or iron, securely riveted to canvas as hereinafter clearly described.
With the above and other objects in view this invention comprises certain construction and arrangements of parts clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
A is the bow or frame of the buckle; B is the apron, C is a clamping plate bent U- shape to receive the back bar of the frame A and one end of the apron B. This clamping plate C has openings D in its curved portion for the passage of tongues E and brace rod F, and holes G in its flat portions to receive rivets or other suitable means for fastening the fiat portions G to the end of the apron B as shown in Fig. 2. The tongues E and the brace rod F are mounted on the rear bar of the frame A and contact with the front of the frame A. Straps H are sewed or otherwise secured to the other end Specification of Letters Patent.

have their other ends provided with aseries of holes I for the insertion of the tongues E. J are sleeves loosely mounted on the front bar of the frame A to facilitate movement of the straps H and reduce the frictional wear thereof.
The frame A with the tongues and brace rod mounted thereon being secured to one end of the apron by the clamping plate C, and the straps H being secured to the other end of the apron and passed under the front bar of the frame A and the tongues E secured in the proper holes in said straps the ends of the apron are secured together in a most simple and effectual manner by my means which as shown and described extend the entire width of the apron.
I have shown and described the front and rear bars of the frame A as braced by a single bar secured at its ends thereto, and two straps H, but in practice two or more brace rods F and three or more straps H may be employed according to the width of the apron without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A buckle comprising an open rectangular frame having end, front and back bars, a brace rod connecting the front and back bars thereof and dividing said frame into two similar sections, tongues pivoted on said back bar centrally of said sections. and a plate bent into a substantially U shape with its bight embracing said back bar and provided with a central opening for the passage of said brace rod and spaced holes for the passage of said tongue, the side edges of said plate engaging the end bars of said frame, the arm of said plate being adapted to be secured upon opposite sides of one end of an apron and said frame sections being adapted to receive separate flaps on the other end of the apron.
