Be it known that I, THOMAS B. MASON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Horseshoe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to o-vershoes or auxiliary shoes for horses, to be worn in connection with the regular shoes, particularly to prevent slipping on snow and ice in winter weather.

Objects of my-invention are to provide a horse shoe of the indicated character, improved in various particulars, with a view to facilitate the attachment of the shoe in position, and to hold it firmly; to provide a shoe of simple construction, possessing the requisite strength and wearing qualities; and to provide an overshoe and attaching means so formed and arranged that the overshoe will be positioned adjacent to the heel or heel calk of the ordinary shoe.

The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming .part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an overshoe embodying my invention, showing the same applied; Fig. 2 is a plan view, part of the attaching means being omitted; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation with the attaching means omitted; and Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 44 Fig. 2.

My improved overshoe is adapted to be applied to the hoof A having any ordinary shoe B permanently secured thereto.

In constructing a practical embodiment of the invention, a bar shoe generally designated by the numeral 10 is formed to extend transversely against the underside of the ordinary shoe, and is provided with suitable calks 11 which preferably are detachably secured by means of threaded studs 12 011 the calks and threaded orifices 18 in the bar 10. The bar is formed with up wardly extending side clips 14, and each clip is formed with an oblong slot 15 inclined to the horizontal, the rear ends of the slots being the higher. The clips 14 and the attaching means co-acting therewith are of such a character that the bar 10 will be positioned and firmly held adjacent to the heel of the shoe B.

The slots 15 receive loops 16 having hooks 16 at the lower ends of the arms thereof. By reason of the inclination of the slots 15, the hooks 16 will. engage the clips 14 on an incline and the top bars 16 of the loops will be correspondingly inclined. The loops 16 are permitted a swinging movement on the clips 14: for conveniencein the engage ment of the strap 17. Also the loops 16 flare toward the upper end, presenting a broad opening to receive the strap 17 which is equipped with any ordinary buckle 18 and is adapted to extend across the front of the hoof A near the top.

On each clip is a rearwardly inclined arm 14 provided near the rearend thereof with an orifice 19 for engagement of a heel chain 20. The chain 20 it is not necessary to have particularly tight, in order to perform its functions of restraining the bar 10 against forward movement. By forming the clips with the arms 14", a short length of chain 20 suflices.

By the described construction, the overshoe can be applied with facility, even in very cold weather, or when the fingers of the user are liable to be numb with the cold. Even gloved hands may quickly position and secure the shoe. 1

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

An overshoe for horses adapted to be applied to a hoof having a horseshoe thereon, said overshoe comprising a transverse bar carrying calks and provided with an upwardly extending clip at each side, each clip being formed with an oblong slot inclining upwardly and rearwardly and formed with rearwardly extending arms in the rear of and integral with the clip, each of said arms having an orifice therein rearward of the said slots, a separate loop engaging each clip at the slot, the loops presenting hooked side arms flaring in an upward direction In testimony whereof I have subscribed and a top cross bar, a strap connecting the my'name to this specification in the presence respective loops and adapted to extend of two subscribing WitIlBSSGS.
