SHAW BARBER'S APRON I Filed Feb. 12, 1942 2 Sheets-Sh 2 Patented Apr. 20, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BARBERS APRON T. Edd Shaw, Atlanta, Ga. Application February 12, 1942, Serial No. 430,688
1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in appliances for barber shops, and more particularly to a barbers apron.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an apron which can be conveniently disposed in place over a patron with the neck portion thereof snugly fitting the patrons neck without the use of safety pins or other detachable detent means.
Another important object of the invention is to provide fastening means for the neck portions of barbers aprons which will permit a wide range of adjustment to accommodate various size patrons.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view showing the apron in use.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the apron showing the inner side thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed sectional view of the neck portion of the apron showing the outer side thereof.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed sectional View taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the apron is composed broadly of a sheet 5 of opaque or transparent material and a neck portion generally referred to by numeral 6 at one end portion thereof.
The construction of this neck portion 6 consists first in having an inwardly disposed substantially rectangular-shaped opening in the sheet 5 at the intermediate portion of one end of the sheet 5 and as shown in Figure 4, the edge portion of the sheet 5 at this opening is bent back and sewed as at 1 to form a reinforcing hem 8.
At the inner end of the opening and at the bight portion of the hem 8 is a reinforcing strip 9 suitably secured in place. The hem -8 is not only stitched as at 'l at its inner edge, but also at its outer edge as at ID. This reinforces the hem 8 so that a plurality of buttonholes H can be formed in the hem and through the adjacent portion of the sheet 5 and to the end that these buttonholes will maintain their shape.
0n the opposite side portion of the hem l3 from the buttonholes I l is a binding strip l2 secured in place by stitchings l3 and I4, these stitchings serving to'hold in place flexible shanks I5 projecting from knots or heads Hi.
There are preferably two or three of these knots I6 as against a greater number of buttonholes I I, the intention being that any one of the knots or heads Hi can be used with any one of the buttonholes I l to arrive at practically any neck size needed.
It will be found that it is draw the neck portion of the apron about a patrons neck and mere1y insert a selected knot or head l6 into anyone of the openings l l in order to get the proper snugness of the neck portion of the apron about the patrons neck without discomfort to the patron.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A barbers apron comprising a sheet of flexible material having an elongated yoke forming opening in one edge thereof for accommodating the neck, said sheet having a row of buttonholes therein extending along one side edge of the opening, a binding strip overlapping the sheet at the opposite side edge of the opening and sewed thereto to extend along said side edge opposite the row of buttonholes, and flexible fasteners comprising shanks secured between said sheet and strip in a row and by said stitches, said fasteners having knotted ends for insertion through selected buttonholes, the number of buttonholes in said row exceeding the number of fasteners to provide for variably connecting the fasteners to fit the opening around necks of different sizes.
