WILLIAM H. BARTELS, OF OARTHAGE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- FOURTHS OF HIS RIGHT TO GUS VOTE, SAMUEL O. FARMER, JR, AND M. MOOOID, OF FAIRFIELD, IOWA, ONE-FOURTH TO EACH.
FOOT-REST FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,644, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed July 16, 1880. N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. H. BARTELS, of Carthage, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Foot- Rest for Attachment to Rocking-Chairs, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking-chair with my improved footrest attached. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the IS foot-rest, showing the roller.
A represents a rocking-chair ofany ordinary construction. B is a foot-board. O O O is a double roller, attached to the foot-rest board by means of projecting axes D entering pertorations or hearings in brackets E, attached to the bottom of the board B. To the center of one side of the board B is attached, by any ordinary means, a tube or hollow rod, F. Inserted in the upper end of said tube is a rod,
G, having on its upper end a hook for attachment in an eyebolt or staple, H, attached to the chair-seat. This rod G is adjustable in the tube F to lengthen and shorten the attachment, and is secured at any desired adjustment by the set'screw J. The operation of my device is as follows,
viz: The'foot-rest, as described, is attached by the hook on rod G to any ordinary rocking chair, and the foot-board is brought into posi- 5 tion to receive the feet of the occupant. The
chair may be then rocked back and forth, and
by reason of my improvement the feet of the occupant will be kept off the floor at a regulated distance from the chair, and the footrest, being supported on the rollers, will not 40 interfere with the rocking of the chair.
Foot-rests have been attached to rockingchairs before; but my device possesses advantages over any with which I am acquainted, in that the connection to the chair by a single 5 standard will permit of moving the chair around to a considerable extent without straining, and that it is not necessaryin occupying the chair to climb over a connecting-rod or the rest itself and be inclosed Within a fence, as it were, as in cases where there are two connecting rods. Further, my device is much more simple in construction and much less expensive to manufacture, occupies much less room, and is, on these accounts, much to be preferred.
What I claim as my invention is- The foot-rest herein described, consisting of the foot-board B, the brackets E, having bearings or perforations, the roller (J 0, having projecting axes D, the single adjustable connection composed of rods F and G, and set-screw J, in combination with a rocking-chair having an eyebolt or staple, H, attached to its seat,
all as described, and for the purpose set forth.
W. H. BARTELS. In presence of-- M. A. M00011), 0. H. HERRING.
