CIGARETTE PACKAGE HAVING MEANS FORATTACHING MATCHES THERETO INVENTOR. f Jo/maafl Filed Aug. 18, 1941 ORNEX.
Patented Apr. 6, 1943 CIGARETTE PACKAGE HAVING MEANS FOR ATTACHING MATCHES THERETO Harry B. Johnson, Kansas City, Mo.
Application August 18, 1941, Serial No. 407,293
1 Claim.
This invention relates to packages of the multiple unit type and is particularly useful in producing combined cigarette and match cartons, the latter being conveniently attachable to the former by the user.
One of the important aims of this invention is the provision of a multiple unit package wherein is included a case enclosed by a jacket and both having inter-related means for receiving a portion of and supporting another unit of the package.
Another object of the invention is to provide a multiple unit package for cigarettes and matches wherein the case of one unit is provided with a number of lines of perforations formed and disposed with particular reference to slits in a jacket, over which slits and lines of perforations a strip is secured to seal the same prior to the introduction of the match carrying unit thereto.
This invention has for an even further object to provide a combined cigarette and match carrying package wherein the cigarette package has a number of specially designed lines of perforation and a jacket provided with slits at the lines of perforations, through the medium of which a book of matches may be attached to the cigarette package after the lines of perforations have been converted into slits.
A number of specific structural details embody further minor objects of the invention and the same will appear during the course of the following specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a cigarette package made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the manner of attaching to the cigarette package, a match tion 20 disposed laterally thereto of substantially the same length as the distance between line 12 and scoring l8 to form a flap 22.
A jacket 24 encloses case 8 and has a slit 26 in register with each line of perforations l2 and I4 respectively. The width of slits 26 is great enough to permit an overlying strip 28 having adhesive 30 thereon, to enter and seal the perforations in lines l2 and H.
Strips 28 are easily lifted from their operative position over slits 26 and when the package of cigarettes having a case and jacket 8 and 24 respectively, formed as above described, is purchased, the user may readily apply the match book IE to create a multiple unit p a e e that shown in Fig. 2.
After withdrawing strips 28 lines of perforations I2 and H are developed into slits by tearing case 8 therealong and then the free end of the cover 32 of match book. I6 is forced into the slit formed by the lower line of perforations I4, and thence upwardly toward the slit formed by the upper line of perforations l2.
Flap 22 is held in the position shown in Fig. 4 by the fingers of the operator, to insure that the end of cover 32 will pass outwardly through the slit formed by perforations l2. This flap 22 closes the space between cigarettes l0 and the side wall of case 8, wherein the slit is formed, and as force is exerted in the direction shown in Fig. 4,
rettes l0. One wall of case 8 has two lines of perforations l2 and M respectively, provided therein adjacent to but spaced from the ends of case 8. The distance between lines of perforations l2 and I4 is in conformity with the length the cover 32 and back wall 34 of book 16 are drawn to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
, After book I8 is in place, flap 22 serves to seal the opening that otherwise appears along the upper end of book l6, if flap 22 were not created. Thus, when match book It is closed and held by case 8, the slits through which it is threaded are sealed.
From the foregoing it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that a cigarette package having means for attaching matches thereto may be economically constructed by following the concepts of this invention, and while the preferred embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is understood that many modifications might be made without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In a multiple unit package of the character described, a case forming a part of one unit havin; two lines of perforations provided therein: a Jacket enclosing the case having a'slit provided therein in register with each of said lines of perforation respectively; and a strip removably overeach end thereof eiitending laterally therefrom toward the scoring to define a flap, the other of said lines of'perforations being spaced from the first mentioned line to the side thereof opposite from the scoring, the edges of the slits being on each side of the respective lines of perforations to expose the latter after the said strip has been removed.
